Derby Day success for Redoute’s Choice as sire & damsire

Adding a new Group 1 winner to his burgeoning record as a broodmare sire wasn’t enough for Redoute’s Choice on Saturday.

A little over three hours after Extra Brut (out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Dom Perion) raced away with the $2 million VRC Victoria Derby 2500m G1,  the Champion Sire posted his 161st lifetime stakeswinner.

That was the Bob & Sandra Peters’ home-bred mare Galaxy Star, whose easy 2.5 length victory in the $150,000 WATC Asian Beau S. 1400m G3 suggested it would not be her last black-type success.

The 6YO mare has now booked a start in the Railway S. G1 over 1600 metres on 24 November, the first of Perth Racing’s three $1 million races billed as The Masters at Ascot.

Trained by Grant & Alana Williams, Galaxy Star is the second of only two foals bred by Peters Investments from city winner Galaxy Queen (by Jeune) before her premature death in January 2013.

Galaxy Queen’s stakes-winning half-sister Star Encounter has been even more successful at stud, leaving three stakeswinners including Galaxy Star’s close relatives Perfect Jewel & Royal Star, both by Redoute’s Choice.

The mighty son of Danehill is currently among the top ten sires on both the Australian General Sires’ premiership (where he’s 8th with earnings of just over $3 million), and the Broodmare Sires’ list where he’s chasing Redzel’s damsire Rubiton in clear second position, with more than $7 million prizemoney.

Extra Brut (by Domesday) is Redoute’s Choice’s 12th Group 1 winner as a damsire, and the second Victoria Derby winner out of a Redoute’s Choice daughter, after Ace High last year.

He can also claim a role in the Coolmore Stud S. G1 trifecta by Sunlight, Zousain & Lean Mean Machine. They are all from the first crop of Zoustar whose dam Zouzou is a first-crop daughter of Redoute’s Choice.
