Second Group win for Vavasour

A prolific stakes-producing family, a Group 3-winning mare whose yearlings routinely sell for six figures and a once-in-a-generation champion sire – that’s the recipe which has produced grand New Zealand mare Vavasour.

On Saturday at Avondale the daughter of Redoute’s Choice showed plenty of fight to defeat Farm Boy and add the $100,000 Counties Cup 2100m G3 to the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic G2 she won last season.

Vavasour is a three-quarter sister to Melbourne Group 2 winner Vilanova, from the Red Ransom mare Valpolicella. Bred by Garry Cranny, Cathy Franich’s Frantic Bloodstock & Haunui Farm, she is raced by Ger Beemsterboer and Chris & Sarah Green of Barneswood Farm who wnet to $425,000 to secure her from Haunui’s 2013 NZ Premier Sale draft.

The mare’s co-trainer Peter Williams said, “She’s getting better all the time. And she’s showing us she could win a big one.”

The Waikato Cup, also a Group 3 race, on 12 December is her likely next target, with either the Auckland Cup or an Australian campaign possible after that.

Vavasour takes her champion sire’s tally of worldwide stakeswinners this season to eight.

Redoute’s Choice has 23 lots catalogued for the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, including 3 fillies and 4 colts in the Arrowfield draft.
