It’s been a wonderful late Summer & early Autumn for The Autumn Sun who notched up stakeswinner no. 11 – and his 8th Group winner – when Arrowfield graduate Autumn Break won the $250,000 ATC Carbine Club S. 1600m G3 on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

He is The Autumn Sun’s 7th individual stakes performer in the past two months after Group 1 winners Autumn Glow & Autumn Boy (also runner-up in the Doncaster Mile G1 & Randwick Guineas G1), Group 1-placed After Summer and Listed-placed Aurora Rise, Helioson & Plymouth. And Arrowfield’s own Carbine Club runner Olympian very nearly made it 8 with a slashing effort for 4th, less than a length from the winner, at his first run in Sydney for Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich.

Autumn Break’s rider Sam Clipperton was impressed by his performance.

“He was very brave today and congratulations to all the team involved. He was tenacious that last 100 metres and he gave me a beautiful spin.

“He presented in beautiful order, had a lovely run in the race, I was able to pop out three wide on the back of one at the 1000m which gave me a good drag into the race. It was touch and go at the furlong, but he really dug in and got his head in front, against a pretty handy group of three-year-olds.”

Autumn Break is bred on the same cross as millionaire Know Thyself, being out of Dubawi’s daughter Isdaal, a winning half-sister of dual Sydney Group winner Junoob, from the family of Group 1 winner Lahib.

Offered by Arrowfield at the Inglis Classic Sale, Autumn Break has now earned $238,000 – almost 6 times his purchase price – for his owners including Albury trainer Kym Davison, who celebrated not only his first Group winner, but also his first-ever metropolitan winner.

The gelding has progressed steadily since winning a Super Maiden at Wagga last August, winning twice on his home track before a brief summer spell, followed by a TAB Highway third at Randwick in February, then a 3rd & 5th in Country Championships Qualifiers before heading to the Carbine Club as an alternative target.

As for The Autumn Sun, he holds third spot on the current Australian General Sires’ Premiership with $15.8 million prizemoney. He has plenty of opportunities to boost that figure substantially in the next few weeks.

Also worth watching, now and into next season, is The Autumn Sun’s lively crop of 2YOs, including debut winners Satomi, Sunbliss & The Autumn Affair, placegetters Autumn Charm, Autumn Lover & The Roaring Sun and trial winner Isn’t She Autumn.
