Sapelli makes 81 SW for Flying Spur
No sooner has Flying Spur’s affinity with mares by Sir Tristram’s sons & grandsons been highlighted, than Sapelli steps up with further proof of its power in tonight’s $HK2.3 million HKJC Premier Plate 1800m HK-3.
The 5YO gelding, from Zabeel’s daughter Ishkala, loitered under his lightweight of 51 kg at the back of the field until just before the turn, when jockey Eddy Lai drove him forward and wide, as favourite Mighty High sprinted to the lead. The pair put up a spirited fight until the post, where Sapelli’s short head advantage made him Flying Spur’s 81st stakeswinner.
Stakes-placed 2YO winner Ishkala was purchased in foal to Flying Spur for $95,000 by breeder Highview Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions Winter Broodmare Sale. Sapelli won a New Zealand trial as a 2YO in May 2008 and was then sold to Hong Kong where he is trained by John Size for Mr & Mrs Albert Chan Koon Sang.
Sapelli has now won seven and placed in nine of his 33 starts, and earned more than $A1.1 million prizemoney. He’s the leading earner in Hong Kong this season for Flying Spur, who has been a top 10 sire there since 2005.
Sapelli is the best of eight winners from Ishkala, a daughter of Western Music (VRC Maribyrnong Trial S. LR), and the 12th stakeswinner by Flying Spur from mares by sons and grandsons of Sir Tristram.
Flying Spur , Australia’s champion sire of 2007, has 31 lots in the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, including five fillies and a colt in the Arrowfield draft .
