Not A Single Doubt strikes at Randwick & Flemington

Saturday’s new Group winners Not A Single Cent at Flemington and Sugar Bella at Randwick gave Not A Single Doubt his eighth same-day stakes double and consolidated his position among Australia’s top half-dozen sires this season.

2YO colt Not A Single Cent showed the benefit of his debut fifth at Caulfield last month with a determined victory in the $200,000 VRC Sires’ Produce S. G2.

That was the start of an amazing day for Canberra-based Michael Thomas, as owner-breeder of Not A Single Cent and his older half-brother Happy Clapper, who won the Canterbury Stakes G1 about 90 minutes later.

Not A Single Cent was sold to Ciaron Maher Racing for $280,000 from the Willow Park Stud draft at the Magic Millions Sale, with Thomas retaining a share of him, and Aaron Purcell training the colt while Maher completes his six-month suspension.

Sadly, the dam of both horses, Busking (by Encosta de Lago) died in January 2017, leaving a now-yearling full brother to Not A Single Cent.

At Randwick the Kris Lees-trained Sugar Bella maintained her near-perfect record when she snatched a last-stride victory in the $150,000 Wenona Girl Quality 1200m G3.

The 4YO mare has now won six of her 7 starts and returned almost twice the $135,000 Fesen Pty Ltd paid for her at Magic Millions, where she was offered by breeder Corumbene Stud. Like Not A Single Cent, Sugar Bella may step up to Group 1 company at The Championships.

Sugar Bella is the last foal of dual Group winner Hula Wonder (by Hula Chief), and is related to Group 2 winner Fell Swoop, also by Not A Single Doubt.

Not A Single Doubt has added almost $400,000 to his Australian earnings in the past week and, with $7.9 million is comfortably ahead of sixth-placed Street Cry –  at least until Winx lines up in the George Ryder S. G1 on 24 March!

The son of Redoute’s Choice has taken his lifetime record to 53 stakeswinners, 18 of them juveniles. He has 19 lots catalogued in next month’s Inglis Easter Sale, including two colts in the Arrowfield draft
