Nine weeks, 4 stakeswinners for Snitzel
Not A Single Doubt and Snitzel have been playing sibling tit-for-tat for the first nine weeks of 2016 and after Saturday’s feature racing, the score is tied at four stakeswinners and five stakes wins apiece.
The latest skirmish in the brotherly war began when Not A Single Doubt posted his 31st stakeswinner, the 2YO filly Selenia, who scooted to victory in the VRC Festival of Racing S. LR.
Snitzel took less than two hours to hit back with his 36th lifetime stakeswinner Redzel, who continued Triple Crown Syndications’ great run of success with Snitzel’s progeny by winning the $125,000 ATC Fireball S. 1100m LR at Randwick.

Although it was only the second win by the 3YO gelding, he had shown abundant ability in his previous seven starts. He defeated Japonisme by three lengths at his 2YO debut a year ago, and was then third behind Furnaces & Regatta Rebel in the ATC Kindergarten S. G3.
Last Spring, still racing as a colt, Redzel produced a frustrating sequence of fifth placings in black type company. The decision to geld him and bring him back up again for late Summer & Autumn racing has clearly been the right one.
Like Triple Crown’s earlier Snitzel-sired stars, Group 1 winner Hot Snitzel & Group 2 winner Flying Snitzel, Redzel is his dam’s final foal. Bred by Lee Fleming, he’s the seventh winner and second stakeswinner out of Millrich (by Rubiton), herself a smart, Group-winning juvenile and third in Flying Spur’s 1995 Golden Slipper.
Snitzel’s blossoming success meant that Triple Crown’s Chris & Michael Ward had to pay $120,000 to buy Redzel from the Marquee Stud draft at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, a little more than the $85,000 they needed to secure both Hot Snitzel & Flying Snitzel from Arrowfield a few years earlier.
However, Redzel has now returned just over $160,000 on that investment and is likely to get the chance to employ his relentless pace in richer company, possibly The Galaxy G1 on 19 March. He’s also nominated for the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint G2 on the second day of The Championships, 9 April.
Snitzel’s other stakeswinners this year are Sun Jewellery (dual domestic Group 1 winner in Hong Kong), Group 2 winner Perignon & Group 3 winner Spill The Beans.
The super son of Redoute’s Choice has 29 lots on offer at next month’s Inglis Easter Sale, including a colt and a filly in the Arrowfield draft.
