Group 3 victory for Dundeel’s daughter

Trainer Clinton McDonald was confident that Dundeel’s daughter Jasmin Rouge would run well in the $200,000 MRC Thoroughbred Club of Australia S. 1200m G3, but her starting price of $31 reflected the fact it was only her second start after a luckless debut third at Bendigo last month.

The 3YO filly stepped up in no uncertain terms to chase down Tobeornottobe in the final stages and become her sire’s 33rd individual stakeswinner, and his 8th stakeswinner this year in a group headed by Celestial Legend (Randwick Guineas G1 & Doncaster Mile G1) and Group winners Red Aces, Konasana, Tannhauser & Kingofwallstreet.

She is also the 36th stakeswinner – and 9th this season – for Snitzel as a broodmare sire, helping him hold 5th spot on that Australian premiership. (He added his 6th Group 1 winner in that role when Captured By Love won Saturday’s NZ One Thousand Guineas G1.)

Jockey Ben Melham said, “Really nice filly. She has always shown good ability at home and she’s a long way from the finished product. To come here as a maiden and win at her second start with the upside that she’s got – it was great.”

Bred by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds, Jasmin Rouge was a $70,000 purchase by her trainer from Segenhoe at the 2023 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, also where Red Aces was sold.

She is the fifth foal and third winner out of the Arrowfield-bred mare Sweetener (by Snitzel), a Group-placed three-quarter sister of Group 1 winner Secret Agenda (by Not A Single Doubt), Group 1 performer Tutta La Vita (by The Autumn Sun) and two other Group-placed winners.

Jasmin Rouge is the 16th stakes performer from 124 runners bred on the Dundeel/Redoute’s Choice & sons cross, a list that is headed by Group 1 winners Celestial Legend (also out of a Snitzel mare) and Super Seth.

They are among the 10 winners so far left by Arrowfield’s grand broodmare Negotiate whose yearling colt by Too Darn Hot will be offered for sale in 2025.
