Flying Spur filly makes $400,000 at NZ Premier Sale

Flying Spur posted his highest price so far in 2013 when Trelawney Stud took his attractive daughter from Stella Livia through the New Zealand Premier sale-ring yesterday.

Well-known New Zealand owner Gary Harding, who races star 3YO filly Fix, was the successful bidder at $400,000.

Four other yearlings by the champion sire son of Danehill were sold during the two-day Premier Sale, notably Pencarrow Stud‘s $220,000 colt from Madeleine Noblet, bought by leading syndicator David Ellis.

They are among the 114 members of the second-last crop of Flying Spur, who was retired from stud duties at the start of the 2012 breeding season.

However, he continues to make a positive impact on Australian racing as a sire (59 winners & $2.2 million prizemoney this season); broodmare sire (third on the Broodmare Sires’ list with 116 winners & $4.2 million prizemoney); and sire of sires (his son Casino Prince heads the 2nd Season Sires’ list).

Flying Spur is enjoying a particularly good year with his current 3YOs, conceived in 2008 on his career-high fee of $137,500. Progressive recent winners from that crop include Lampedusa (Trainer: Peter Moody; 3 wins from 4 starts, inc. two in Melbourne); That’s A Good Idea(Mark de Montfort; 2 wins in Sydney); and Hazard (Anthony Freedman; 3 wins, inc. two in Melbourne).

In Singapore the fine campaigner Flying Fulton won his fourth domestic Group race in November, while in New Zealand 4YO mare Full of Spirit was 2nd in the ARC Rich Hill Mile G2 on New Year’s Day.

Flying Spur has 18 yearlings catalogued for next month’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, including 3 colts and 2 fillies in the Arrowfield draft – here .
