First Light happy to land “”filly of the Classic Sale””
First Light Racing co-founder Tim Wilson says the Melbourne-based syndicator landed “the filly of the sale” when he paid $135,000 for a daughter of Not A Single Doubt to provide one of the highlights of Monday’s second session of the Inglis 2013 Classic Yearling Sale Summer Book.

Wilson, the filly’s new co-trainer Mathew Ellerton and leading bloodstock agent Paul Willetts prevailed in a strong bidding duel to secure the filly from the Grand Lodge mare Happy Camper. She was offered by Huntworth Stud which also sold Group 3 winner Direct Charge (by Charge Forward) at last year’s Classic Sale.
Wilson said the team was thrilled to win the battle for the yearling after they earmarked her as the best buy of the sale during numerous inspections.
“She’s by Not A Single Doubt who has the current Blue Diamond (Miracles of Life) and Slipper favourites (Villa Verde) and this filly is the best of his progeny we’ve seen,” Wilson said.
“There’s a lot of Redoute’s Choice about her and she’s just a lovely moving filly with great shoulder and strong hind quarters. She was the best filly we’ve seen across the two sales (Magic Millions and Inglis Classic) this season and I think everyone here was on her.
“She’s worth every cent and more and we’re just thrilled to have secured her.”
Wilson said the early position of the Inglis Classic Sale Summer Book auction was the fact purchases will be able to wind down from the hectic period at the sales complexes before trainers begin to work on them to prepare prospective two-year-olds for an early campaign.
“The beauty of January sales is she’s straight into our system and that’ll give her every chance to make an early runner,” Wilson said. “She’s already on a float to Victoria and we’ll give her three or four weeks to recover from the sales before she gets broken-in and we start dreaming of the major two-year-old races with her.”
First Light’s new purchase will be on display at the operation’s open day at Glenfern Park, Romsey on Australia Day, 26 January.
The filly was the second most expensive Not A Single Doubt yearling sold at Newmarket on Tuesday after Perth trainer Neville Parnham outlaid the equal top price of the sale of $170,000 for a brother to Sydney winner Conroy’s Gap, from the Anabaa mare Fleecing.
