Eight Saturdays, 9 stakes wins for Snitzel
Snitzel’s tremendous roll through late summer Australian stakes racing continued on Saturday when his 3YO son Mr Mozart played a quick tune in front to win the $200,000 ATC Phar Lap S. 1500m G2.
That’s the 9th stakes victory added by seven different horses to the Champion Sire’s record on the last 8 consecutive Saturdays, with New Zealand-based 3YO Sword Of State and leading Golden Slipper contender Best Of Bordeaux the multiple winners.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes expressed the stable’s satisfaction with the colt and his jockey William Pike, who has recently moved from Perth to Sydney.
“It was a beautifully judged ride by Willie, he got out in front and controlled the tempo and Mr Mozart just loves to run. That was the plan, for Willie just to take his time to get to the front.
“I thought they were going to roll along a little bit more than what they did and then when he kept rolling and got to the front, I thought, wow, he’s some chance now.”
The sharp-eyed will have spotted the Arrowfield brand on Mr Mozart’s left shoulder, explained by his foaling and early life in Arrowfield’s care on behalf of his breeders who also race him: James Chapman’s Jamieson Park, David Russo, Phil Duggan, Patricia Collins, Andrew McDonald & Ron Milne.
The first foal of Melbourne Group winner Euro Angel (by Rip Van Winkle), Mr Mozart has an unraced 2YO sister Angel Flight, also retained by her breeders, among his Hawkes Racing stablemates. Euro Angel produced a Pierro colt last Spring and is back in foal to Snitzel.
Mr Mozart is one of nine 3YO contributers to Snitzel’s imposing tally of 20 stakes wins so far this season, a cohort headed by Group 1 winners In The Congo (Golden Rose) & Yearning (Thousand Guineas). Snitzel’s 2018 crop is currently running at 9.4% SW/Runners with earnings of $7.5 million and a total of 17 Group & Listed victories.
Snitzel has 26 yearlings at Inglis Easter – 16 of them offered by Arrowfield.
