Dundeel star wins Tasmanian Derby

Dundeel added the 8th stakes win to his season record when star 3YO Dunkel pulled off a terrific victory from an impossible position in Friday evening’s $150,000 Tasmanian Derby 2200m LR.

Stable representative and Dunkel’s part-owner Annie De Morton said, “Paddy [Payne] set the horse for this race after he won a race at Moonee Valley and thankfully he has been able to achieve his final goal.

“We had quite a few anxious moments in the straight but Harry [Coffey] managed to pull off a miracle and get him home.”

Bred by Pencarrow Stud from the stakes-placed Cape Cross mare Kudamm, Dunkel was a $40,000 purchase from Pencarrow’s draft at Karaka 1, then re-sold for $100,000 at the NZ Ready to Run Sale.

He has now earned almost $400,000 after winning five of his 6 starts including last month’s Launceston Guineas LR, and is nominated for the Australian Derby G1 at The Championships.

Dunkel is the second of Dundeel’s stakeswinners this season that is in-bred to Sadler’s Wells, after two-time Group winner Hope In Your Heart (out a Montjeu mare).

Dundeel has 18 lots catalogued for sale at the 2023 Inglis Classic Sale
which begins in Sydney tomorrow at 10 am.
