Charge Forward filly finds her groove

“Won’t be beaten” was the verdict from jockey Jason Lee, quoted on trainer Gai Waterhouse‘s blog, after riding Urban Groove on Tuesday.

That judgement proved spot on when the 3YO daughter of Charge Forward and Morton (by Flying Spur) bolted in by 5 lengths on debut at Kembla Grange this afternoon. In the process she posted a time of 33.39 seconds for the last 600 metres.

Recoinage ( Flying Spur -Sovereign Duchess by Last Tycoon) completed an Arrowfield-sired quinella.

Bred and sold by Arrowfield, Urban Groove was a $240,000 purchase by the Waterhouse stable from the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. She displayed abundant ability in training early last season and was on the Magic Millions trail until an injury ended her campaign. An easy win and a placing in two trials last month indicated she had lost none of her talent, which will no doubt soon be seen in city company.

Morton, a city-winning daughter of dual Group 1 winner Heat of the Moment, has a 2YO full brother to Urban Groove and a yearling colt by All American who, like Charge Forward, is a Danzig-free son of Red Ransom. Morton is due to foal again to All American this spring.

Urban Groove is the 10th winner from 16 runners bred on the Charge Forward/Flying Spur cross, also responsible for G1 Headway, G1-placed stakeswinner Fort Lincoln & G2-placed winner Road Trippin’.

Charge Forward, the sire of five Group 1 performers among his 15 stakes performers, stands at a 2012 fee of $24,750 inc. GST.
