Nothing Idle about Dundeel’s Flyer!

Dundeel’s 4YO daughter Idle Flyer became his 10th Group 1 winner with a tremendous victory in a top-class renewal of the $1 million ATC Queen of the Turf 1600m G1 on Day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

Last-start winner of the Emancipation S. G2, Idle Flyer levelled up to multiple Group 1 winners Treasurethe Moment, Pride Of Jenni and finally Arrowfield graduate Lady Shenandoah (by Snitzel) before kicking clear to score by 0.85 length in 1.33.81 – a new record for the race.

She is the 9th stakeswinner, and the 2nd Group 1 winner from Dundeel’s 2021 crop after South Australian Derby winner Femminile.

Idle Flyer’s jockey Zac Lloyd said, “Fantastic to win on her, I love her as a horse and that just shows in our record together. For her to go into that race, it was a proper horse race against the best milers in the country. They’ve got a proper horse on their hands.

“She can travel at a high speed, obviously is the key when you’re versing Pride Of Jenni. I got a lovely run today in behind Lady Shenandoah and Treasurethe Moment, I was in the perfect spot at the 600 and my horse delivered.”

Idle Flyer (ex Progressive by Street Cry) was a $70,000 purchase by her trainer Matthew Smith & Brett Howard’s Randwick Bloodstock from her breeder Torryburn Stud at Inglis Classic. With 8 wins from 15 starts, including the Angst S. G3 last Spring, and prizemoney of $1.2 million, Idle Flyer has already richly rewarded her owners Lex & Sandy Tall, Matt & Mel Smith and partners, and her potential is not yet fully tapped. She will now target further Group 1 success at the Queensland Racing Carnival.

Torryburn Stud has achieved outstanding success with Dundeel’s daughters, as breeder & vendor of Idle Flyer and Mare Of Mt Buller (Epona S. G3), and first home of grand Group-winning sprinter-miler & Queen of the Turf runner-up Hope In Your Heart. Torryburn subsequently presented her for owner-breeders Alex & Deidre Iles at the 2024 Inglis Chairman’s Sale, where she was knocked down to Arrowfield’s $750,000 bid. Mare Of Mt Buller is catalogued for the same sale next month.

It’s been a fruitful late Summer & Autumn for Dundeel, thanks to Idle Flyer, 3YO filly Stung (Clare Lindop S. LR) and 6 other stakes performers headed by Militarize (3rd, Doncaster Mile G1), Polymnia (twice Group-placed) & Litzdeel, a strong-finishing 5th in the Sydney Cup G1 after a Listed second at Flemington.
