Busy weekend puts Snitzel back on top
Scallopini’s fourth stakes win and Group placings by Best Of Bordeaux, Mr Mozart, Yearning & Basquiat have put champion sire Snitzel back on top of the domestic General Sires’ table.
Yes, his lead is narrow, and yes, it’s early in the season, but his emerging and returning firepower makes him as formidable in front as Scallopini was at Flemington.
That win, his progeny’s 28th black type success in the past 12 months, also maintains Snitzel’s exceptional average of one stakes win every 13 days – a pace he’s kept up for the past six years.

Now an 8YO with 11 wins and $808,000 from 38 starts on the board, Scallopini looks well up to generating plenty more excitement for his owners, including breeder Steve Gillard and syndicator Proven Thoroughbreds, who paid $200,000 for him at Magic Millions in 2016.
He now returns to Queensland for a Spring break under the watchful eye of his trainers Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted who will then prepare him for the Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday on 14 January.
Saturday was also significant for Scallopini’s unraced dam Rose Of Mulan (by More Than Ready) whose 4YO daughter Shades Of Rose won the Sheraco S. G2 at Rosehill a couple of hours after her half-brother’s victory.
All up, Snitzel’s progeny added $429,000 to his Australian season earnings over the weekend taking him past $1.6 million, largely compiled by his 36 winners and eight Group & Listed stakes performers since 1 August.
