It was a brave effort by the handsome 3YO who drew nine and was caught wide for most of the journey, before challenging the talented St Yazin and forging ahead to win by a short neck in 1.10.22, with 2.5 lengths back to last season’s champion 2YO colt Antonio Lombardo in third place.
This was the fourth win from seven starts for the son of Group 1 winner Grand Echezeaux (by Zabeel), also the dam of multiple Group 1 winner and promising young New Zealand sire Darci Brahma (by Danehill).
Bred by Peter & Philip Vela, Burgundy was purchased for $1.3 million by David Ellis at the 2010 NZ Premier Sale, and is trained by Jason Bridgman for the Te Akau 2010 Breeding Syndicate.
Burgundy is one of Redoute’s Choice’s 11 stakeswinners worldwide this season, and among his outstanding tally of 46 3YO winners in Australia & New Zealand. Number 46 came at Newcastle today when Strawberry Boy (ex Strawberry Girl by Strawberry Road) won on debut for owner John Singleton and trainer Gai Waterhouse.
Redoute’s Choice has a stellar draft of 43 yearlings on offer at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, including 3 colts and 3 fillies in the Arrowfield draft.
