Redoute's Choice's cup overflows with Burgundy
As syndicator Te Akau describes him, Burgundy is “”a high-class horse with looks to match”” and he performed accordingly to complete the New Zealand half of today’s trans-Tasman stakes double for Redoute’s Choice .
3YO colt Chiaramonte provided the Australian success in the ATC Darby Munro S. LR at Rosehill.
Racing at Awapuni in the Manawatu RC Flying H. 1400m LR, Burgundy began well and led in the early stages before settling behind Open ‘N’ Shut. At the top of the straight Jockey Matt Cameron pushed Burgundy back into a lead that he defended tenaciously to the finish-line, where his winning margin was a half-neck to I Do, with a long neck further back to third-placed Special Draw.
It was the 4YO entire’s fifth black type success and an impressive effort first-up from a 72-day break following his excellent third in January’s WRC Telegraph H. G1. His record now reads 7 wins and two placings from 12 starts and prizemoney of more than $200,000.
Bred by Peter & Philip Vela from the Group 1-winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux, and raced by the Te Akau 2010 Breeding Syndicate, Burgundy is a three-quarter brother to leading young New Zealand sire Darci Brahma, whose 2YO daughter Recite took out today’s Manawatu Sires’ Produce S. G1.
Burgundy is one of three New Zealand stakeswinners this season by Redoute’s Choice (the others are 3YO fillies Abidewithme and Pure Elegance).
Arrowfield’s champion sire has been represented by 16 stakeswinners worldwide in 2012/13, and he maintains a Stakeswinners/Runners strike rate of better than 11.5%. His 34-strong draft of yearlings at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale is headed by the half-brother to the current superstars of Australian racing, Black Caviar and All Too Hard.
The Arrowfield & Bellerive drafts include five colts and two fillies by Redoute’s Choice – view their photos and videos here .
