Yorkshire Lad adds black type for Snitzel

Never out of the money in his six-start career, 3YO colt Yorkshire Lad, by Arrowfield’s 2nd season sire Snitzel gained black type today in the VRC Springtime S. 1400m LR, on the final day of Cup Week at Flemington.

It was Yorkshire Lad’s first outing in stakes company, and he put up a staunch performance for second, beaten a neck by the favourite Bigelow and holding out previous stakeswinner Territory, after sitting wide without cover and fighting hard up the Flemington straight. The Snitzel colt has progressed steadily from his 2YO debut third at Hamilton in April, to his maiden win at Warrnambool on 18 October, and his first city placing, behind Bigelow and Blooded at Moonee Valley on 29 October.

Bred by Woodside Park Stud in Victoria, Yorkshire Lad was sold for $26,000 at the Melbourne Yearling Sale to Warrnambool trainer Aaron Purcell who races the colt with his family and clients. He is the seventh black type performer by Snitzel, the brilliant Group 1-winning son of Redoute’s Choice, hot on the heels of 3YO filly Zelsnitz, who ran third in the VRC Desirable S. LR on Melbourne Cup day.

Yorkshire Lad’s dam Coffee Delight is a daughter of Marauding and the 1984 champion Australasian 3YO filly Burletta, winner of 16 races and dam of eight winners from 12 foals, including the South African Group 1 performer White Tie Affair (by Marauding’s sire, the great Sir Tristram).

Two other first-crop runners completed an excellent day for Snitzel with good efforts in New South Wales. Snitz Kiss (ex Healing Kiss by Dr Fong) broke his maiden over 1400 metres at Newcastle, and the filly Switmoa (ex Ripe Plum by Spectrum), a recent winner at Canberra, was second at Goulburn.

Snitzel has now had eight winners in Australia this season, and nine 2YO winners in Japan, where he shuttled in 2007. His seven stakes performers include last season’s Group 2 juvenile winner Chance Bye and the recently Group 2-placed 3YO Top Drop.
