Dundeel’s 38th stakeswinner turned up in spectacular fashion at Toowoomba on Saturday when Tavs raced away with the $160,000 Weetwood Quality 1200m LR, scoring by 4.6 lengths in track record time of 1:10.25.
The victory was the culmination of a plan hatched by trainer Mark Currie after Tavs finished a close 4th behind Transatlantic & Desert Lightning during the Queensland Winter Carnival.
As Currie explained, “He raced really well all last preparation and after he ran fourth in that Listed Race at Eagle Farm he looked a little tired, so we put him away with the Weetwood in mind and it has all paid off.
“He’d been trialling really well and we came here pretty confident and it all came together perfectly. Couldn’t be happier. There’s a bit still ahead for this horse.”

Jockey Angela Jones added, “His turn of foot was just amazing. Having that underneath you was almost like a race car, I was trying to find the brakes at one stage he was going that well…He really is a horse going places. He felt amazing.”
Bred and initially raced by Ottavio & Wendy Galletta, Tavs is one of 3 winners left by Quattro Foglie, a winning daughter of Group 1 sire Beneteau (by Redoute’s Choice), who died after leaving only two crops. She has since produced two fillies and a colt by Castelvecchio, all retained by the Gallettas.
They include 4YO mare Hazel Jean, a winner & city-placed from the Warwick Farm stable of Richard Litt who prepared Tavs for his first 3 wins, until his move north last November. Tavs has now won 7 races, including three 1400-metre sprints, at Eagle Farm and taken his career earnings to $375,000.
