Top effort by Top Drop at Rosehill

Winners by two Arrowfield-based sons of Redoute’s Choice opened and closed a splendid day of racing at Rosehill today.

Not A Single Doubt ‘s daughter Karuta Queen won the first race, the ATC Heritage S. LR, and Snitzel ‘s son Top Drop claimed the last event with a game win under top weight of 60.5 kg in the Benchmark 80 ATC Jim Beam Handicap. Top Drop’s winning time was 1:09.94, a new class record for the 1200 metres.

The good-looking 4YO entire, bred by Peter Horwitz from the Red Ransom mare Fine Red, has steadily compiled the very respectable record of three wins, six placings and $343,800 prizemoney from 16 starts. That includes a second to Decision Tme in last spring’s AJC Stan Fox S. G2, and a third placing in January’s GCTC Magic Millions Guineas (R) LR.

Top Drop is owned by a partnership including the Bradley Racing Syndicate, Scott Cameron, Wayne Harrison and Norm & Carolyn Pinder, and trained by Gerald Ryan who trained Snitzel himself, and has achieved conspicuous success with his progeny.

Ryan also prepares the smart 3YO filly Hollyweird, who dead-heated for second behind Karuta Queen today, as well as Group 2 winner Hot Snitzel, and stakes-placed city winners Saramenha and Schiffer. They are among ten stakes performers from Snitzel’s first two crops, and Top Drop is one of eleven winners for him so far this season.

Top Drop’s pedigree is interesting: he is inbred 3 x 3 to Danehill and descends from the outstanding 1970s racemare Jandell, whose daughters and grand-daughters have redeemed her own disappointing stud career by producing more than a dozen stakeswinners, notably G1 Vinaka and G2 Skoozi Please. The best of Jandell’s 11 foals was Jullene (by Sir Tristram), a stakes-placed winner of five races who left Listed stakeswinners Brackenbury and Rullene, and Group 3 winner Kilspindie – second dam of Top Drop.

Snitzel stands at a 2011 fee of $27,500 inc. GST.
