Third win for smart Royal Snitzel

Snitzel’s smart daughter Royal Snitzel scored her third win in four starts when she strode home in dominant fashion at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

It was the 3YO filly’s first racetrack appearance since her August second placing to Sabatini in the MRC Quezette S. G3, where her racecraft didn’t quite match her abundant ability.  (Sabatini was later third in the MRC Thousand Guineas G1.)

Managing owner Peter Creighton of United Syndications and trainer Mick Price then sent Royal Snitzel for an 8-week spell with the aim of setting her for an Autumn stakes campaign and all going well, a major assault on the Melbourne Spring Carnival. On the evidence of her return performance, Royal Snitzel is right on target for the first stage of that plan.

Piloted by New Zealand apprentice Michael Dee in his first Melbourne ride, Royal Snitzel jumped well, but was held out three wide until driven forward to settle behind the early leader Bullpit. Dee kept her mind on the job around the bend, she took the lead 150 metres out and powered home to win by 1.5 lengths in a tick over 58 seconds from Just Magical and Shaf.

Dee said, “I was very lucky that I was able to get on this horse. It was a great opportunity for me at my first ride. She is a really nice filly who relaxes and has a kick at the end.”

Royal Snitzel was bred by United Syndications from the good city racemare Royal Charades (by Royal Academy), winner of eight races up to 1200 metres. The filly’s second, third & fourth dams were similarly talented and genuine city class performers, and then fine producers, with 18 wins and 17 winning progeny among the three of them, including 1990s Group winner Protara’s Bay.

Royal Charades has a yearling colt by Charge Forward.

Meanwhile, Snitzel has begun the 2015 yearling sales season with an average price of more than $240,000 for 43 lots sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. Two Snitzel colts will be offered by Cambridge Stud & Lyndhurst Farm at the New Zealand Premier Sale this coming week, followed by 10 lots at the Inglis Classic Sale, including a colt and a filly in the Arrowfield draft.
