The essential sire of stakes-winning 2YOs

Just as every woman serious about fashion needs a little black dress, so every stable serious about 2YO racing needs a Snitzel.

That’s the message underlined by Arrowfield graduate filly Little Black Dress with her second win from two starts for the Go Racing Hepburn Syndicate & the Stephen Marsh stable in Saturday’s NZ$100,000 Star Way S. 1200m LR at Ellerslie.

It was achieved with a measure of drama after her resolute stablemate Lady Iris moved sideways in the final 200 metres, but Little Black Dress recovered her momentum to claim victory by a head from that filly, with Too Sweet third.

She is Snitzel’s 61st juvenile stakeswinner and the 4th from his 2022 crop, after Group 1 winners Marhoona (Golden Slipper) & Return To Conquer (Sistema Diamond S.), and Blitzburg (Canonbury S. G3).

Jockey Wiremu Pinn said, “She is a very good horse with class written all over her. She is beautifully bred and won her first start in good fashion and has put away a smart field here today.

“Even with the bump she picked herself up, pinned her ears back and had a real go. I think she is a Group One horse as what she is doing now is on ability only, whereas in six months she will be even better.”

Little Black Dress is the 4th winner bred by Arrowfield from Star Fashion (by Street Cry), who won the  Ladies’ Day Vase G3 and placed in the Australasian Oaks G1 and Edward Manifold S. G2. Offered in the Stud’s Inglis Easter 2024 draft, she was purchased for $240,000 by Go Racing & Blandford Bloodstock.

The Redoute’s Choice sons/Street Cry daughters combination has now produced 10 stakeswinners (including Group 1 winners Farnan & Treasurethe Moment) from only 57 runners.

A few minutes after Little Black Dress crossed the line, another member of Snitzel’s 2022 crop, Prestige Snitzel won the $150,000 Mornington Sires at her third start for David Brideoake & Matt Jenkins. From the Group 3 winner Imposing Lass (by Makfi), she was a $370,000 Inglis Easter purchase by Hong Kong-based owner Eric Yeung from Silverdale Farm’s consignment.

Prestige Snitzel is her sire’s 17th juvenile winner this season and helps to tighten Snitzel’s grip on the Australian 2YO Sires’ Premiership where he has a $1.3 million break on his nearest rival.
