Super Saturday for Dundeel & Castelvecchio

After 7 stakes wins on 21 March for Arrowfield and its stallions, including 4 outstanding Group 1 victories at Rosehill, a quieter day last Saturday would have been no surprise.
But Dundeel and his son Castelvecchio had other ideas!
In little more than hour their daughters compiled Group 1, Group 2 & Listed stakes victories at Rosehill and Morphettville, with a new Arrowfield graduate stakeswinner capping a second consecutive super Saturday for the farm.
Dundeel’s 4YO daughter Idle Flyer kicked off proceedings with her second Group success in the $300,000 ATC Emancipation S. 1500m G2, and will next be seen in the $1 million Queen of the Turf S. G1 on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick.

Trainer Matthew Smith said, “Zac [Lloyd] was very confident before the race on how he was going to ride her and he got to exactly where he said he would. Things were a bit tight at the top of the straight but he had plenty of horse underneath him.
“She’s a good mare isn’t she … very good.”
Bred by Torryburn Stud, Idle Flyer is the best of three winners left by city winner Progressive (by Street Cry) who, like Redoute’s Choice, Shoals & Marhoona, descends from the influential broodmare Dancing Show, ancestress of 48 stakeswinners, 14 at Group 1 level.
Matthew Smith & Brett Howard’s Randwick Bloodstock purchased Idle Flyer for $70,000 from Torryburn’s draft at Inglis Classic. She has now won 7 of 14 starts and earned almost $600,000 for her ownership group.
The next race at Rosehill, the $1.5 million ATC Tancred S. 2400m G1 produced an enthralling battle between Castelvecchio’s daughter Aeliana, backing up from her Ranvet S. G1 win, and 4-time Group 1 winner Dubai Honour who took the early lead and wound up the pace before the turn. That put pressure on Aeliana who answered James McDonald’s every call and lifted in the final 200 metres to catch the unflinching Dubai Honour just short of the line.
McDonald said, “Probably would have loved to have a bit of cover but it didn’t work out that way. She was so brave, it wasn’t my plan to give him so much of a headstart. I just waited and waited for her to be ready and when she was ready she just exploded.”
AELIANA – SHE’S ALL HEART 💜🤍
Another classic Group 1! Dubai Honour so brave but Aeliana has grabbed him in a Tancred for the ages to make it two Group Ones in a week 🏆🏆@mcacajamez @cwallerracing @startbreds pic.twitter.com/v9PdMR738r

Now a triple Group 1 winner of $4.4 million, Aeliana (ex Temolie by Star Witness) was bred in New Zealand by Nearco Stud &Rich Hill Thoroughbreds and purchased for $180,000 by Denis Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds from Rich Hill’s draft at Karaka. She joins Taras Bulba & Starcraft as the best of 33 stakes-winning descendants of New Zealand’s famous 1930s staying mare Queen Of Song, winner of the 1936 Wellington Cup and 4th in that year’s Melbourne Cup.
There was barely time for Arrowfielders, including the Inglis Easter Sale team watching Saturday’s racing at Riverside Stables, to catch their breath before the day’s next highlight. That came from Morphettville where 3YO Dundeel filly Stung finished too well for her rivals in the $120,000 SAJC Clare Lindop S. 1600m LR.
Now a 3-time winner from her first 4 starts, Stung (ex Rare Ransom by Oasis Dream) is a home-bred for Rupert & Cheryl Legh, raced in partnership with Bryan Dorman & Joe Pulitano, and trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes. She will now stay on in Adelaide for the $1 million Australasian Oaks G1 on 25 April.
Arrowfield graduate 4YO gelding Roselyn’s Star (Shalaa-Dual Star by Starcraft) sealed a very rewarding day with victory in the $250,000 ATC Star Kingdom S. 1200m G3. He and Doncaster Prelude G3 winner Welwal on the same card are among 28 stakeswinners by Shalaa, who stood at Arrowfield for six seasons and is now based at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria.

Roselyn’s Star was bred in partnership with Paul Favretto and purchased for $220,000 from Arrowfield at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. He has now earned $448,000 for his all-female ownership group, including several members of the Finemore family.
He also joins an impressive list of stakeswinners out of Paul Messara-trained mares that includes Group 1 winners Lady Shenandoah, Stronger, Contentment, Kenedna, Super Seth & War Machine.
Other important Arrowfield results on 28 March included a very close 2nd in the ATC Vinery Stud S. 2000m G1 by graduate After Summer (The Autumn Sun-Al Jasrah). Third in the VRC Oaks G1, she is now second favourite for the $1 million Australian Oaks G1 at Randwick on 11 April.
And at Wyong, Ottavio & Wendy Galletta’s Il Passero (Castelvecchio-Ballet Blanc) & Prime Thoroughbreds’ Flying Embers (Shalaa-Fire Gully) filled a graduate quinella in the $150,000 Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifier. Both horses have qualified for the $1 million Final, also on The Championships Day 2 program at Randwick. A third Arrowfield graduate, Matcha Latte (Maurice-Wayward), who won the 2025 Final, has qualified again this year and is the current pre-post favourite.
