Stakes double for Arrowfield sale graduates

Arrowfield yearling sale graduates Rose of Peace and Werd – both by former Arrowfield sire Hussonet from Danehill mares – completed a notable two-state stakes double within 20 minutes today.

First up was 4YO mare Rose of Peace (ex Rose O’ War by Danehill), who surprised her owners and punters alike when winning the $100,000 ATC Wenona Girl Quality 1200m LR at Randwick from Quidnunc and Alberton Park. It was only her second win, but her 10-start 3YO record did give some clues to her ability.

Rose of Peace was 4th in Bazilian Pulse’s VRC Wakeful S. G2 and 3rd in Parables’ ATC Surround S. G2, beaten less than two lengths in both races. Furthermore, her first win in February last year was at her campaign debut, which indicated to trainer Gary Portelli she may perform best when fresh. So it proved today, at her first start since 21 January.

Rose of Peace was bred by Arrowfield in partnership with John Leaver and sold at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Sale for $170,000 to Martin Byrne Bloodstock. She is raced by the Doyles Breeding & Racing Syndicate and is the first stakeswinner for her Group-winning dam, who also has a 3YO Hussonet filly named Roses in Spring, a 2YO More Than Ready filly named I’m Wicked and a yearling colt by Starcraft.

The spotlight then shifted to Western Australia where the very consistent sprinter Werd broke through for his first black type victory in the $80,000 WATC Stakes 1100m LR – setting a new race record of 1.04.77.

The son of Hussonet and Messenger Miss (a three-quarter sister to Green Desert) now has a record of 10 wins and 14 placings, five at Listed level or better, from 39 starts, and prizemoney of just over $500,000. Bred by the partnership of Arrowfield and Gainsborough Stud, Werd was purchased for $360,000 by Tim Stakemire from the Arrowfield draft at the 2006 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

Werd and Rose of Peace take champion sire Hussonet’s season tally of Australian stakeswinners to four, and his lifetime tally to 80, including 28 Group 1 winners – more than any other active Australian sire.

Hussonet is represented by 7 choice lots at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Sale, among them five colts offered by Arrowfield . They include the first yearling offered for sale from champion filly Miss Finland, the full brother to Blue Diamond S. G1 winner Reaan and a colt from dual Group 1 winner Hollow Bullet.

Hussonet now stands at Cornerstone Stud in South Australia.
