Spend it, Win it with Snitzel
Just over five weeks out from the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, Spending To Win is an aptly named 93rd lifetime stakeswinner for three-time Champion Sire Snitzel, as pre-eminent in the sale-ring as he is on stallion premierships.
It wasn’t the plan for Spending To Win to lead in the $140,000 ATC Starlight S. 1100m LR, but Tim Clark’s judgment and the gelding’s fitness & determination proved up to the task of holding out Glenall (by Redoute’s Choice) and the favourite Handle The Truth.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden said, “When he kicked on the corner I said, ‘he’s going to give this a good shake’ because he had three trials going into it.
“We normally only give him one or two but there were no suitable races for him so I gave him a good platform to work from. That was full of courage there today.”
Spending To Win was the star of a productive 24 hours for Snitzel, also represented by debut 3YO winner Refreshed and city winners Orcein, Snitz & Discharged.
Bred by Fergus Doyle from Irish Group 2 winner Madame Trop Vite (by Invincible Spirit), Spending To Win was a $300,000 purchase for Snowden Racing from the Widden Stud draft at the 2015 Magic Millions Sale. He has covered that outlay with an excellent 62% win & place record over five seasons and $458,300 prizemoney for his owners Trevor Stuckey, Penny Yan-Stuckey and Susan Yan.
Spending To Win is Snitzel’s 11th stakeswinner this year, a list headed by Group 1 winner Trapeze Artist and Group winners I Am Excited, Exhilarates, Irithea, Redzel & Taikomochi.
A century of stakeswinners is just one of the remarkable career statistics that Snitzel is busy compiling. His 11 Australian crops of racing age have – so far – generated:
- 73.7% Winners/Runners
- 9.7% Stakeswinners/Runners
- 36 2YO stakeswinners
- $138,229 earnings per runner
- 13 winners of 19 Group 1 races including the Golden Slipper, Cox Plate, Golden Rose, Australian Guineas, TJ Smith S., The Galaxy, Oakleigh Plate, Lightning S. & The Everest
- 7 of those 13 Group 1 winners were sold by Arrowfield: Estijaab, Heavenly Blue, Hot Snitzel, Invader, Snitzerland, Sweet Idea & Wandjina.
Snitzel has 57 yearlings catalogued for the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale including five colts and 3 fillies in Arrowfield’s consignment.
