For the past eight years, Champion Sire Snitzel has opened his season record with an August stakeswinner and on Saturday 3YO colt Zoukerino upheld the tradition with a superb victory in the $160,000 ATC The Rosebud 1100m LR.

That’s Snitzel’s 20th August stakes success as a sire, while Zoukerino is his 124th stakeswinner and the fourth Snitzel colt to win The Rosebud after Sandbar (in 2018), Menari (2017) & Thronum (2016).

But it didn’t come easily. Zoukerino showed great determination to dive between Troach (3rd) and Maurice’s son Kibou (4th), hold his line and burst clear of the wayward Spacewalk.

Trainer John O’Shea said, “That was a very, very good performance to do that at his second start and in very good company.

“He has had to overcome adversity to win. He’s always been a horse we have thought highly of, he’s a real colt, he’s the real deal!”

Bred by John & Trish Muir’s Milburn Creek, Zoukerino is the 5th foal and 4th winner from the Flemington Listed winner Walk With Attitude, whose sire Hussonet is such an effective foil for Redoute’s Choice and his sons.

Zoukerino was purchased for $500,000 at Magic Millions National by agent Suman Hedge, who races him with Sheriff Iskander, Milburn Creek and Joe Richards. He was one of Snitzel’s 18 2YO winners last season, a cohort that also includes Group-winning colts Best Of Bordeaux, Williamsburg & Lofty Strike, stakes-winning filly Stroll and 12 other juvenile stakes performers.

Walk With Attitude has a 2YO filly by I Am Invincible and a yearling colt by The Autumn Sun.

Snitzel’s quick season-start has propelled him to an early 2nd spot on the 2022/23 Australian General Sires’ Premiership with 13 winners and almost $450,000 prizemoney.
