Snitzel’s Silver Slipper quinella

A pair of Snitzel colts staked their claim to Golden Slipper glory in last Saturday’s thrilling contest for the $250,000 Sliver Slipper S. 1100m G2, and both are now quoted at $11 for the big show on 19 March.

Their paths in the race could not have been more different. Best Of Bordeaux, brilliant winner of the Canonbury G3 winner on debut, won a bustling early battle for the lead and Sam Clipperton used his razor-sharp speed perfectly to nail a valuable second Group victory.

Arrowfield’s Inglis Easter graduate Magic, making his debut after three trial placings, settled towards the rear and at the top of the straight he seemed certain to stay there. Hampered by the colt’s greenness and the movements of other runners, jockey William Pike struggled to find racing room for him until the final 75 metres.

At that point Magic mustered a startling burst of acceleration that took him within a length of victory, with the filly Cythera, raced by Arrowfield as part of her novel IRON ownership, 1.7 lengths back in third spot.

Best Of Bordeaux was bred by Gerry Harvey who retained a share in the colt after Baramul Stud sold him for $425,000 to trainer Kacy Fogden & the Fung family of Aquis Farm at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

He is the second foal of Harvey’s home-bred Melbourne winner Chateau Cheval, a High Chaparral half-sister to Group 1 winner & sire Casino Prince, as well as three other stakeswinners and the dam of Prince Fawaz (J.J. Atkins P. G1).

Best Of Bordeaux is Snitzel’s third Silver Slipper winner after Chance Bye (2010) and Sweet Idea (2013). Other winners of the race include subsequent Golden Slipper winners Farnan, She Will Reign, Mossfun & Pierro.

Magic is the full brother of Thousand Guineas G1 winner Yearning, both out of the top-class  mare Rising Romance (by Ekraar), whose race record included the Australian Oaks G1 and seven Group 1 placings.

Rising Romance’s third foal, a Snitzel colt, is Lot 377 in Arrowfield’s 2022 Inglis Easter draft.

The Silver Slipper result brings up Snitzel’s 17th stakes quinella and his 17th stakes win in 2021/22. It also takes him past the $10 million mark on the Australian General Sires’ Premiership for the 6th consecutive season.

Snitzel has 10 lots on offer at next week’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and a stellar collection of 26 yearlings at Inglis Easter.
