Snitzel’s Hawkesbury Group double

Snitzel has just sealed his fourth $41 million+ yearling sales season, but the true bottom line of his spectacular stud career is always found on the track.

The 4-time Champion Sire notched up his fourth same-day stakes double of the 2021/22 season when first Mr Mozart, and then Exotic Ruby collected Group 3 features on Hawkesbury’s big day.

3YO colt Mr Mozart is already an old hand at winning stakes races: the $200,000 Hawkesbury Guineas 1400m G3 is his third consecutive Group victory, and his fourth stakes win this season.

Born and raised at Arrowfield, the immensely likeable 3YO colt is raced by his breeders, New Zealand-based James Chapman’s Jamieson Park with David Russo, Phil Duggan, Patricia Collins, Andrew McDonald & Ron Milne. Their decision to keep him has so far resulted in 5 wins and $531,000 prizemoney.

The same group also raced the colt’s Caulfield Group-winning dam Euro Angel (by Galileo’s son Rip Van Winkle), a daughter of Windsor Park Stud’s wonderful imported mare Polish Princess, who left four Group winners to four different stallions in Australasia.

Exotic Ruby, winner of the $175,000 Hawkesbury Crown 1300m G3, is a different kind of story.  Bred by Luskin Park Stud, Aston Bloodstock, Malcolm McGuinness, Conrad Staff & Peter Duncan, she is the first foal of Oriental Ruby (by Street Cry) and was a $260,000 Joe Pride purchase from Magic Millions.

She won her debut at Hawkesbury as an early 4YO and has performed consistently well in Sydney fillies & mares company through changes of stable and ownership.

Bjorn Baker has prepared Exotic Ruby for the past two years and his confidence in her superior fitness on the Heavy9 track was matched by jockey Rachel King’s belief in the mare’s competitive spirit.

“I was confident she was going to keep toughing it out. She is very tough and when one gets to her I know she’ll fight. I knew she was rock-hard fit and ready to run the best race.”

Exotic Ruby now carries the Royal Blue, Red V silks of long-time Snitzel supporter Carl Holt who completed a winning Hawkesbury treble with Hardware Lane (by Scissor Kick) and Sacrimony. However, the breeding barn now beckons for the 6YO mare, catalogued as Lot 721 for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale later this month.

Exotic Ruby is Snitzel’s 17th stakeswinner this season, and takes his career tally of stakeswinners to 121.
