Snitzel filly makes it two-from-two

The Snitzel-Sharp Enough filly was the standout lot at the 2012 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale where she was offered by Arrowfield Stud. Sure enough, she made $90,000, the highest price at that sale, paid by Warwick Farm trainer David Vandyke.

Now named Kayjay’s Joy, she is trained for owner K. J. Orth at Gosford by Angela Davies. Racing on her home course today, the 3YO filly scored her second win from two starts, by 3.5 lengths.

She is a talented soldier in an army of only 119 runners that has, in the past few days, shouldered Snitzel into absolute first position on the Australian General Sires’ list. That’s ahead of the deceased champion German sire Monsun, sire of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente whose Spring earnings of $4,234,500 have, until now, exceeded the tallies of every Australian-based sire.

Snitzel has eclipsed him with a total of $4,295,942, thanks largely, it’s true, to Shamus Award, winner of the MVRC W.S. Cox Plate G1. However, he’s also had four other stakeswinners so far this season: 3YO Sweet Idea, 2YOs Oakleigh Girl & Golconda and 5YO Malavio.

They have come from a pool of 119 runners – fewer than all but one stallion (Reset, sire of Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner) among the ten leading stallions on the General list.

Snitzel is one of two Redoute’s Choice sons with five crops of racing age in that group. The other is Stratum, also enjoying a terrific season with six stakeswinners & $3.2 million prizemoney from 177 runners. Stratum is currently 7th on the General Sires’ list.

Snitzel has 23 fillies and 22 colts catalogued for next month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, including a quartet of stunning fillies in the Arrowfield draft – view them here.
