Single Gaze wins Arrowfield Classic

The Arrowfield roster had only one runner in Friday’s Illawarra TC Arrowfield Classic 1600m G3, the notably competitive and well-travelled filly Single Gaze.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt turned out to be more than sufficient representation, as she fought off, then pulled away from her rivals to win the $200,000 Kembla Grange feature by almost a length from Dixie Blossoms, with Asinara third.

Single Gaze is Not A Single Doubt’s 32nd stakeswinner, his ninth this season and the fifth of his progeny to salute in black type company since 1 January.

That it was only her second win from 12 starts, yet took her earnings close to $900,000 is an indication of the company Single Gaze has been keeping since her winning debut as a 2YO at Rosehill in 2014, with Good Project third and Exosphere unplaced behind her.

In fact, all but two of her 11 starts before Friday were in Group & Listed races and she had placed in five of them, including the Black Opal S. G3 in Canberra and the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (R) LR.

She was given a good spell after a busy juvenile season and did not return until December, opening her campaign in Sydney, then the Gold Coast, ahead of a top effort for second, only a length from Mahuta in the Magic Millions Guineas (R) LR.

That was her first run over 1400 metres and supported trainer Nick Olive’s feeling that Single Gaze would relish a mile, and possibly further.  The filly repeated the message when she split Ghisoni and Stay With Me in last month’s Surround S. G2, also over 1400 metres.

Olive said after Friday’s win, “She just tries her heart out every time. It was great to see her win again, she has been such a good filly for us.

“I have always had a massive opinion of her as a three-year-old filly and just great to see her break through again,

“She has given us the feeling that she would run a strong mile and maybe further and we will sit down and see where we go next.”

The $500,000 Vinery Stud S. G1 over 2000 metres at Rosehill on 26 March may well be her next start.

Single Gaze was bred by Redbank North’s Jamie Middleton with Arthur Mountier, Albert Tory, Wayne Oxford and Mark Cullen and sold for $70,000 to Nick Olive at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. Redbank North and Mr Oxford have remained in the filly’s ownership.

Single Gaze is the third foal and third winner out of city winner Redaluca’s Gaze (by Intergaze), also dam of 2YO stakeswinner Le Val (by Snitzel) and a yearling colt by Commands sold for $280,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Sale. Redaluca’s Gaze is once again in foal to Not A Single Doubt.

Who has, thanks to Single Gaze and Unequivocal’s Bede Murray Provincial Championship Qualifier win, extended his lead on the General Sires’ table with prizemoney of $7.6 million, almost $340,000 ahead of Street Cry.
