Continuing our series on the clues Snitzel’s progeny record offers to guide matings with his son Showtime.

One of Snitzel’s most successful crosses is with mares by sons and grandsons of Roberto whose influence as a sire has certainly matched his fame as the only horse to beat the great Brigadier Gerard.

Arrowfield’s Pedigree Analyst Peter Jenkins explains the success of this combination.

“In Snitzel’s pedigree his closest duplication is that of Lunchtime at 5 x 3 and Lunchtime features a duplication of ‘blue hen’ mare Plucky Liege through her sons Bull Dog and Bois Roussel.

“So it’s no surprise that he works extremely well when matched with sires from the line of Roberto, who features three strains of Plucky Liege through Bull Dog and two other successful sire sons, Sir Gallahad III and Admiral Drake.

“Red Ransom is particularly compatible as he carries a female sex-balancing strain of Nearctic, the sire of Northern Dancer who occurs four times in Snitzel’s pedigree.”

Snitzel’s matings with Roberto’s son Red Ransom and his sons, including Charge Forward & Domesday, have produced Champion 2YO Estijaab, Champion 3YO Colt Trapeze Artist and Group winners Chance Bye & Sweet Redemption among 7 stakeswinners from 52 runners. That’s an impressive strike rate of 13.4%.

Other broodmare sires whose daughters can repeat this combination with Showtime are All American, Brocco, Casual Lies, Duporth, Ekraar, Onemorenomore, Prized, Red Element & Roc de Cambes.
