Second SW for Castelvecchio in 8 days

Star Thoroughbreds’ 3YO filly Aeliana produced a stunning finish along the rails to win the $250,000 ATC Reginald Allen Quality 1400m LR on Everest Day at Randwick.

That was just one of 6 stakes & feature race victories for Arrowfield stallions & graduates during an exhilarating four hours in Sydney & Melbourne.

Aeliana is the second stakeswinner in 8 days for Arrowfield’s exciting young sire Castelvecchio, after 3YO colt El Castello’s success in the Gloaming S. G3 on 12 October. He is second favourite for next Saturday’s Spring Champion S. G1, while Aeliana is quoted at $11 for the Thousand Guineas G1 on 16 November.

Castelvecchio is now 2nd (behind Too Darn Hot who has not shuttled this year) on the Australian Second Season Sires’ table, with 6 winners and $776,000 prizemoney.

Freshened after winning her second start on 14 August and an unplaced run on 4 September, Aeliana’s stakes-winning performance didn’t surprise trainer Chris Waller. 

“She has started her innings, that is for sure…and I do not think it will be her last one. Right from her first win here on the Kensington track, it was pretty special. We backed off her after that to try and have her ready for a race like this, so we thought enough of it to bring her today.”

Aeliana’s jockey James McDonald said, “Pretty competitive race and she’s a filly first-up. She’ll improve off that and she did a really good job today. She’s only had a few starts so it is all ahead of her.”

Aeliana is the second foal of Temolie (by Star Witness), purchased in foal for $200,000 from Edinburgh Park Stud at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale by the filly’s breeders Nearco Stud & Rich Hill Stud. 

Offered under Rich Hill’s banner in Book 1 of the 2023 Karaka Yearling Sale, Aeliana was secured for $180,000 by syndicator Denise Martin who would have instantly recognised her female family. Temolie is a half-sister to Star Thoroughbreds’ Group 1 winner & $3 million earner Invincibella, as well as Group winner Secret Blaze and Listed winner Extreme Flight.

Further back, Aeliana’s pedigree is notable for a pair of tough New Zealand stakes-winning fillies Taciturn & Tell All (both by Noble Bijou), and Australian stayers The Hind (Adelaide Cup G1) and Oregon Star (Geelong Cup LR).
