Scallopini completes Snitzel’s stakes double
Take a quality performer who has run good races without winning since a Listed victory in May 2020.
Add a dash of sibling jockey rivalry, a weight advantage and an ownership & training team that never lost faith in their horse and you have Scallopini’s victory in Saturday’s $130,000 Sunshine Coast Cup 1400m LR.

Piloted by Boris Thornton, the handsome 7YO son of Snitzel held off Oscar Zulu – ridden by Boris’ sister Stephanie – in a competitive finish to claim the race for the second time, after winning it in 2020.
This victory takes Scallopini’s record to 10 wins, 11 placings and $600,000 in a rewarding 32-start career for his owners including breeder Steve Gillard and syndicator Proven Thoroughbreds who paid $200,000 for him at Magic Millions 2016.
Scallopini is the best of three winners out of Rose Of Mulan (by More Than Ready), an unraced daughter of dual Sydney Group winner Lady Mulan, descended from the Palestine mare Miss Rhondda, imported to New Zealand by the Lowrys of Okawa Stud more than 50 years ago.
His latest win completed a same-day stakes double for Snitzel, following 2YO Best Of Bordeaux’s Canonbury S. G3 victory at Rosehill, and takes the Champion Sire’s season tally of stakeswinners to 13, including Sword of State in New Zealand.
In Australia, Snitzel has just cracked $9 million prizemoney for 2021/22 and edged his son Shamus Award out of third spot on the General Sires’ Premiership.
Snitzel has 10 lots catalogued for the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, two yearlings on offer at NZB Karaka Book 1 and 26 lots in the Inglis Easter catalogue – 16 of them in Arrowfield’s consignment.
