Running Timeform’s ruler over Pariah
As Pariah’s first yearlings gain nods of approval from the sale company teams now inspecting them, we look back at how Timeform Australian handicapper Gary Crispe at Racing & Sports assessed his 2YO career.
Pariah made his first raceday appearance less than 10 months after James Harron purchased him for $700,000 from Arrowfield’s 2016 Inglis Easter draft and what a spectacular debut it was. Pariah won the 1100-metre Canonbury S. G3 at Rosehill in race record time of 1:04.63 and a fortnight later he was runner-up in the Blue Diamond Prelude G3 at Caulfield.
Pariah filled the same position in a truly run Blue Diamond S. G1, beaten less than a half-length by top-notch filly Catchy after racing three wide without cover. The pair finished more than two lengths ahead of their rivals.
Those performances earned Pariah a Timeform figure of 118, with only Invader (Sires’ Produce G1) & She Will Reign (Golden Slipper G1) ranked above him, on 119.
Among last season’s 2YOs only Not A Single Doubt’s son Farnan is rated above Pariah, who slots in ahead of Rothfire, Tagaloa, Hanseatic, King’s Legacy and Prague.
Pariah shares his rating with a high-powered group of 2YOs from the past 20 years: Golden Slipper winners Kiamichi, Estijaab and Ha Ha, Blue Diamond winners Pride Of Dubai and Miracles Of Life, Champagne Stakes winner Mentality and JJ Atkins winners Benfica and Darci Brahma.
His 118 figure is also higher than the ratings awarded to 35 2YO Group 1 winners in the past two decades, including 2 Golden Slipper winners, 5 Blue Diamond winners, 6 Sire’s Produce winners and 18 JJ Atkins winners.
And in the last 10 years, Pariah shares 8th spot among Timeform’s top-rated Australian juvenile performers.
Arrowfield has 23 first-crop Pariah yearlings for the 2021 sales, 28 foals due this Spring and is backing him even more strongly in this, his third season, with an increased allocation of 43 mares.
