Redzel heads Snitzel’s record-breaking day
At the halfway mark of Saturday afternoon’s racing in Australia, premiership leader Snitzel was already having a very good day.
By then he had notched up a two-state 2YO stakes double thanks to convincing wins by Debonairly in the $150,000 Woodlands S. LR at Scone and Tangled in the $175,000 Champagne Classic G2 at Doomben.

But the best was yet to come. Triple Crown Syndications’ 4YO gelding Redzel has been one of the country’s most progressive performers this season and he sealed his rise with a powerhouse victory in the $700,000 BRC Doomben 10,000 1200m G1. The Redoute’s Choice 4YO Counterattack finished strongly to complete a father-son quinella, with Derryn third.

Both placegetters are likely to line up in $1.5 million Stradbroke H. G1 on 10 June, but co-trainer Peter Snowden confirmed that Redzel and fourth-placed Russian Revolution (also by Snitzel) will head to the paddock for a richly earned break. Between them they have won seven of their 13 starts – six of them in Group company – and added more than $1.7 million to Snitzel’s prizemoney.
Bred by Lee Fleming from the Rubiton mare Millrich, Redzel was bought for $120,000 by Triple Crown’s Chris & Michael Ward from Marquee Stud at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. He’s the second Group 1 winner by Snitzel to carry the syndicators’ all-red colours after Arrowfield graduate Hot Snitzel, winner of the 2015 BTC Cup G1 and four other Group races.
Around 15 minutes after Redzel crossed the line in Brisbane, Snitzel’s fourth stakeswinner for the day came from an unlikely quarter. Vienna Miss was given little chance of winning the $150,000 SAJC Adelaide Guineas 1600m LR, but Katelyn Mallyon’s positive ride helped her silence punters with her maiden stakes victory.

Bred by Tori Park Stud, Vienna Miss was sold for $100,000 by Eliza Park International to her trainer John Hyam at the 2015 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Her dam Miss Doopsy (by Bite The Bullet) is a half-sister to the dam of Perth stakeswinners Let It Slip (by Not A Single Doubt) and Gangbuster.
Redzel, Tangled, Debonairly and Vienna Miss boosted Snitzel’s prizemoney to a new Australian premiership record total of $13.8 million, surpassing the previous record of $12.9 million set last season by Street Cry.
