Record NZ price for Snitzel colt

Karaka’s perennial leading buyer David Ellis was busy on Day 2 of the new-format Karaka Book 1 Sale, securing nine lots including the top-priced Snitzel yearling sold in New Zealand.

Presented by Haunui Farm, the colt out of Floria was knocked down for $NZ625,000, a figure exceeded by five Snitzel yearlings at this year’s Magic Millions Sale, and $NZ100,000 above the previous record for a Karaka-sold Snitzel, set in 2017.

Floria (by Savabeel) is a multiple Group winner from the marvellous Princess Patine family nurtured over five decades by Richard Moore and his son David. Prospects for the Snitzel/Savabeel cross look bright, given the affinity of Danehill and Sir Tristram in various combinations, and the fact that Snitzel has already sired Group winners Time For War, Lubiton & Perast out of Zabeel mares.

Two Snitzel fillies, out of Irish Group 3 winner Scintillula (by Galileo) and multiple Group 1 winner Shez Sinsational (by Ekraar) were also sold, for $NZ400,000 and $NZ300,000 respectively.

Snitzel, who posted his 21st stakeswinner this season when 2YO Traces scored in South Africa on Saturday, has three lots catalogued for the upcoming Inglis Classic Sale and eight at Inglis Melbourne Premier. They will be followed by 64 Snitzel yearlings at Inglis Easter in April including eight fillies and two colts consigned by Arrowfield.
