Pariah shines in San Domenico Stakes

Star 3YO colt Pariah heads the betting for next month’s Golden Rose G1 after his commanding win in Saturday’s $150,000 ATC San Domenico S. 1100m G3.

It was the perfect campaign opener for the son of Redoute’s Choice, who won last season’s ATC Canonbury S. G3 on debut and was runner-up in the MRC Blue Diamond S. G1. His jump from gate 9 required skilful direction by jockey Blake Shinn who quickly slipped Pariah through to the fence as the hot pace Taking Aim and Condor Heroes stretched the field out.

Eased out around the turn, Pariah drove through stylishly to master the challenging Madeenaty, sprint clear over the final 200 metres and score by a length from the fast-finishing Chauffeur (by Snitzel) and Jorda.

Watch Pariah win the ATC San Domenico S. G3.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden confirmed afterwards that the $1 million Golden Rose Stakes G1 on 23 September is Pariah’s first Spring goal.

“He’ll run in the Run To The Rose and then obviously the Golden Rose…hopefully we can tick that box and then we can really think about what his future holds.

“After that 1400-metre run we’ll determine what avenue we take with him, if we do press onto the mile or look at The Everest or freshen up for the Coolmore.

“They’re certainly good things to be thinking about.”

Bred by the partnership of Arrowfield, John Leaver, David Paradice and Paul Favretto, Pariah is the first foal of the city-winning Hussonet mare Secluded, which makes him a three-quarter brother to dual Group 1 winner Melito (also by Redoute’s Choice).

The colt was bought for $700,000 from Arrowfield’s 2016 Inglis Easter draft by James Harron for a group of owners including Belinda Bateman, Rob & Donna Love, Fergus Doyle, John & Fran Ingham and Steve Gillard. Arrowfield returned to Pariah’s ownership in April this year after buying a 50% interest in the colt, along with the standing rights for his future stud career.

Pariah’s full brother, already named Melik, was Australia’s top-priced yearling of 2017, selling for $2.5 million from Arrowfield at Inglis Easter to Tim Stakemire for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum. Secluded visits Redoute’s Choice again this Spring.

Pariah was among 18 worldwide stakeswinners last season for three-time Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and is one of five Group winners from only 13 named foals bred on the electric Redoute’s Choice/Hussonet cross.
