Olympic Glory yearlings in demand at Magic Millions

Olympic Glory more than held his own in a strong field of first-crop sires at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale which opened the 2018 selling season.

Al Shaqab’s four-time Group 1 winner was represented by 12 lots in Book 1 and they all sold, averaging $181,667, around 10 times his 2015 fee. A further five yearlings sold up to $90,000 from Book 2.

Top price of $600,000 was paid by Katsumi Yoshida for the colt out of Downtown Manhattan, a full sister to South African Group 1 winner Whisky Baron, from the family of European Group winners Tashtiya, Tashelka and Tasaday. The colt’s grand-dam Tazkara was among the first mares sent to Australia for the joint breeding venture undertaken by HH The Aga Khan and Arrowfield.

Another six colts made six-figure prices, notably Kenmore Lodge’s $260,000 son of Flighty (by Zabeel), knocked down to Spicer Thoroughbreds and champion trainer Darren Weir. Other buyers of those colts were trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott with Blue Sky, Gerald Ryan & David Payne, Guy Mulcaster & Dynamic Syndications.

The top-priced filly was Arrowfield’s daughter of Lanai (by Gone West), bought for $160,000 by trainer Paul Perry. He also signed for the colts out of Catalina Winemixer & Malukar and is enthusiastic about Olympic Glory’s prospects.

“His yearlings are outstanding types, a lot like Olympic Glory himself, with a great shoulder and good bone. I think he’s a standout among the first season sires.”

Paul sees much of Choisir, his former stable star and Olympic Glory’s sire, in these yearlings, especially in the Downtown Manhattan colt on which he was the under-bidder.

Other buyers of Olympic Glory fillies included syndicators Triple Crown and Dalziel Racing with Peter Moody.

Olympic Glory has 22 yearlings on offer by a dozen vendors at next month’s Inglis Classic Sale, among them 5 colts and three fillies in Arrowfield’s consignment
