Not A Single Doubt on a Payroll

A very good week continued on Wednesday for Not A Single Doubt when his 2YO daughter Payroll overcame several disadvantages to score handsomely on debut at Sale.

The Richard Laming-trained filly began slowly and ended up at the back of the field before jockey Jason Benbow sent her forward and four wide round the bend and into the straight. However, that effort didn’t drain Payroll’s tank and she drove clear to win by more than 3 legnths from  The Barrister & The Weald.

Laming said Payroll, an $80,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of her breeder MacQuarie Stud, had never been off the bit in training, so he didn’t know what to expect. He added, “We’re in no hurry with her. I think she will be a better three-year-old.”

Payroll (ex Workhard by Red Ransom) is the 9th juvenile winner this season by Not A Single Doubt, currently second on the Australian 2YO Sires’ list with prizemoney of almost $800,000.

Two days earlier, Prime Thoroughbreds’ filly Atalanta Miss contributed $82,000 to that total when she won the SAJC Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Morphettville.

That was her second win from five starts, three of them Magic Millions races in Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia, and took her career earnings well beyond the $55,000 Joe O’Neill needed to buy her from the Mill Park draft at last year’s Magic Millions Adelaide Sale.

The major highlight of Not A Single Doubt’s week was the powerhouse victory by the Arrowfield-raised Miracles of Life (ex Dazzling Gazelle by More Than Ready) in last Saturday’s $400,000 ATC Challenge S. G2.

It was the 4YO mare’s fourth Group success and her second for celebrated American owner Stonestreet Stables which paid $900,000 for her at last year’s Teeley Dispersal. The 2013 Blue Diamond winner is now likely to start in The Galaxy G1 on 21 March.

Juveniles Single Gaze (2nd, Canberra RC Black Opal S. G3) & Claudia Jean (3rd, VRC Festival of Racing S. LR) have also helped to boost Not A Single Doubt’s season prizemoney close to $4 million – enough to put him among the country’s top 15 sires.

Not A Single Doubt yearlings have already sold for up to $280,000 (at Magic Millions Gold Coast) and $260,000 (at Inglis Melbourne Premier) this year.

The son of Redoute’s Choice has only three lots catalogued for next month’s Inglis Easter Sale, all of them fillies. Two will be offered by Middlebrook Valley Lodge, while the daughter of US stakeswinner Laguna Lake is part of the Canning Downs Stud consignment.
