Mr Manhattan scores at Canterbury

Manhattan Rain is building a strong list of progressive horses and Mr Manhattan joined it when he scored his second win from three starts at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The 3YO gelding, developed steadily over the past 12 months by his large group of owners, including breeders Wilf Mula & Paul Whelan, and his trainer Joe Pride, won his Gosford debut in December. With two wins under his belt, he may now join his talented half-sister Dublin Lass for a winter campaign in Queensland.

The siblings’ dam, Fashion Police (by Elusive Quality from a Danzero mare) is a city-winning grand-daughter of the good filly Fine Recipe, winner of the VRC Bloodhorse Breeders’ Plate G2 at two.

In the 1970s this family’s standard-bearer was the top-class stayer & weight-for-age performer Igloo, whose four Group 1 vicories included the 1974 Brisbane Cup and Caulfield Stakes.

More than a decade later the family threw up the 1987 Blue Diamond S. G1 winner Midnight Fever. Several of her lesser-performed female relatives have since produced Group 1 winner Rock Classic and the Group winners Astrodame & Spurtonic (both by Flying Spur), Leveller (by Redoute’s Choice) & Mahisara.

Hawkes Racing purchased the Starcraft-Fashion Police colt for $200,000 from the Luskin Park draft at the Inglis Easter Sale earlier this month. Fashion Police is due to foal to Snitzel this coming Spring.

Manhattan Rain was also represented on Tuesday by 2YO filly New Summer Night, successful over 1000 metres at Geelong for her owner-breeder Teeley Assets and the Hayes/Dabernig stable.

David Hayes reported afterwards, “She travelled well and was never in danger. We will look to place her in town next start and I think she will develop in to a nice city filly.”

New Summer Night is the third winner from three foals to race for 2YO stakeswinner Beauty School (by Royal Academy), now owned by Rosemont Stud. She also has a yearling filly and a weanling colt by Manhattan Rain.
