Magic rocks on in the West
Perth trainer Chris Gangemi has done well with his purchases from Arrowfield’s racing team, but the stable star is undoubtedly Rock Magic.
The 7YO son of Redoute’s Choice scored his fourth stakes victory with a stylish performance in Wednesday’s $100,000 WATC Idyllic Prince S. 1300m LR at Belmont Park.
It was Rock Magic’s seventh career success from the 20 starts he’s had since transferring to Perth two years ago, after four wins, two in Sydney, when in Paul Messara’s care. He won the Farnley S. LR in his first Perth campaign and last season added the Colonel Reeves S. G3 and Beaufine S. LR, despite interruptions caused by a hoof abscess and then a pricked hoof.
Chris Gangemi believes the talented sprinter is in career-best form and has mapped out a four-race campaign for him at the Ascot Summer Carnival, beginning with the Prince of Wales S. G3 on 29 October. All going well, he’ll then tackle the Colonel Reeves S. G3, the Winterbottom S. G1 and the Scahill S. on 10 December.
Rock Magic has now earned a total of $591,000, most of it for his large group of Perth owners headed by Gangemi Thoroughbreds.
Bred by the partnership of Arrowfield and John Leaver, he is the second foal of Rockabubble (by Bubble Gum Fellow) whose six wins included the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. G1.
Rock Magic is the second stakeswinner this week for three-time champion sire Redoute’s Choice, also represented by MRC Heatherlie S. LR winner Great Esteem – his 135th lifetime stakeswinner – last Saturday.
