Two superlative fillies turned on a stirring contest in Saturday’s $750,000 ATC Surround S. 1400m G1, but it was Arrowfield Inglis Easter graduate Lady Shenandoah who prevailed, defeating Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot by a neck in race record time of 1:20.56.
Champion Sire Snitzel dominated the result with Lazzura, also an Arrowfield graduate, putting up a tenacious effort for 3rd.
Snitzel’s elite sire record now reads 28 Group 1 wins by 21 individual horses, including five multiple Group 1 winners. Already a two-time Australian Champion Sire of 3YOs, Snitzel is 2nd on the current list by earnings, and leads by stakes wins with 13 compiled by eight performers, including Arrowfield Inglis Easter graduate Switzerland (Coolmore Stud S. G1).

Lady Shenandoah’s champion jockey James McDonald said, “I’m rapt with her. She really had to fight it out. Credit to Gai and Adrian’s filly. That was as tough as it comes.
“I thought we were done and my filly pulled out all stops. Top class filly. Obviously we were expected to blaze away but you’ve got to have the tough victories to get the good ones as well. That was a good effort.”
Bred by Arrowfield & Planette Thoroughbred, Lady Shenandoah was purchased for $525,000 by Hermitage Thoroughbreds at Inglis Easter 2023. She is the second Group 1 winner (after Stronger) left by Star Pupil, a Paul Messara-trained winning daughter of Starcraft & outstanding broodmare Ain’t Seen Nothin’. She has now earned $1.2 million from 4 wins for Hermitage & trainer Chris Waller, including the Group 1 Flight & Surround Stakes, and two placings from only six starts.
Arrowfield sale graduates Autumn Angel, Celestial Legend, Lady Shenandoah, Private Life & Switzerland have won 7 Group 1 races in the past 12 months.
Two yearlings by Snitzel come up for sale today at Inglis Premier and he has 45 yearlings catalogued for Inglis Easter 2025, including 3 fillies & 7 colts offered by Arrowfield. The Maurice-Star Pupil colt will also be offered by Arrowfield as Lot 187.
