Group 1 quinella for Not A Single Doubt & Written Tycoon
Not A Single Doubt’s daughter Shout The Bar returned to form with perfect timing on a crowdless Derby Day at Flemington, nosing out Written Tycoon’s daughter Odeum in the $1 million VRC Empire Rose S. 1600m G1.
It was a classic battle of the 4YO mare, winner of last season’s Storm Queen S. G1, and this season’s Thousand Guineas winner in the Spring’s best weight-for-age distaff test. Both enjoyed good runs, both rallied magnificently under pressure and it was perhaps only a few ounces of strength that separated them on the line.
What a finish. By the shortest possible margin, Shout The Bar has defeated Odeum in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes for Damien Oliver and the Waterhouse & Bott team. 👀 pic.twitter.com/M7jMR4kcpt

Adrian Bott, celebrating his 10th Group 1 victory in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said of Shout The Bar. “An incredible mare for us, what she did in her very first campaign was quite special, to win her first Group One at her fourth career start, that was a sign of good things to come.
“While she hasn’t quite had the runs on the board this preparation, we were happy with her performances and it was really good to see her bounce back today, it was a good, strong, tough win.”
Shout The Bar has now won four of her nine starts and almost $1 million for well-known owners Francis & Christine Cook who race her with a group of friends. They won’t have to wait long to see their star in action again: she is set to line up in next Saturday’s $2 million Mackinnon S. G1.
Foaled at Arrowfield, whose brand she bears, then prepared & offered for sale by Newhaven Park Stud on behalf of her breeders Ron Finemore & John Leaver, Shout The Bar was bought for $200,000 by her trainers at the Magic Millions Sale. (Newhaven Park also celebrated the Group 1 quinella, as Odeum’s breeder & vendor.)
She is the first foal of the city winner Drinks All Round (by O’Reilly) from a family nurtured by Kiwi breeders Vicki & Wayne Pike that has previously produced Doncaster & George Ryder Stakes winner Rangirangdoo and multiple Group winner Satinka.
Shout The Bar has two younger full sisters, 3YO She’s A Survivor retained by Finemore Thoroughbreds, and Sun Stud-owned 2YO Emerald Bay, also in the Waterhouse & Bott stable. Happily, Drinks All Round returned to Not A Single Doubt last year and delivered a colt this Spring.
Shout The Bar is Not A Single Doubt’s 5th dual Group 1 winner, after Kenedna, Scales Of Justice, Extreme Choice & Miracles Of Life, and her Empire Rose is the 19th Group 1 win on Not A Single Doubt’s record.
Retired from stud duties after the 2019 season, the much-loved son of Redoute’s Choice currently heads the Australian General Sires’ Premiership with $9.7 million prizemoney. Woodside Park Stud’s Written Tycoon, a very welcome visitor standing at Arrowfield in 2020, is in second spot with progeny earnings of $6.2 million, and Odeum is one of his six stakeswinners this season.
