Fresh stakeswinners for Flying Spur

His last foals are on the ground and he’s enjoying a pampered retirement in the beautiful surroundings of Arrowfield Stud, but champion sire Flying Spur hasn’t left the stage yet.

In fact, he’s taken his share of the limelight over the past fortnight, thanks to his latest pair of new stakeswinners, 3YO filly Green Roller and 4YO gelding Mushreq.

Mushreq (ex Alharir by Jeune) posted his fourth and most valuable career win last night in the Meydan Al Fahidi Fort S. 1600m G2. Bred by Shadwell Stud from a grand-daughter of the wonderful broodmare Easy Date, Mushreq is trained by Mike de Kock for Sheikh Hamdan, and may be seen next in the Dubai Duty Free G1 on World Cup night, 30 March.

Easy Date is also the ancestress of Group 1 winners Forensics, Snippets & Rewaaya and Arrowfield’s leading young sire Not A Single Doubt.

Green Roller (ex Given by Canny Lad) is also a home-bred, this time for Jonathan Munz’ GSA Bloodstock, and her black type success came in the TRC Strutt S. 2100m LR on 10 February. Trained by David Hayes, Green Roller scored at Pakenham in January after a second placing at Moonee Valley before Christmas.

Given, herself a winner of five races including a Listed Race in Melbourne, foaled a Starcraft colt last spring.

These two successes have brought Flying Spur’s lifetime tally of stakeswinners to 88 – and with 82 2YOs, 114 yearlings and more than 60 foals, that figure is certain to increase in coming seasons.

Flying Spur has 17 yearlings on offer at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale which begins on 3 March. Five of them, two fillies and three colts, are part of the Arrowfield draft – here .
