Fourth stakes win for Arrowfield graduate Majmu

An easy win in Saturday’s Turffontein Starling S. 1400m G3 suggests that Group 1 success is not far away for last season’s South African Champion 2YO Filly Majmu.

The grey daughter of Redoute’s Choice started favourite from gate 10 and settled comfortably, but well behind the leaders, during the early running until jockey Anthony Delpech set her alight at the 300-metre mark. Majmu responded instantly and drew away to win by almost two lengths in the outstanding time of 1:22.90 from Siren’s Call and Smart Call.

It’s a performance which supports the de Kock stable’s prediction that “Majmu is a rare talent likely to go all the way to the top in this country and that her global potential will unfold within the next few months.”

It was Majmu’s fourth black-type win from five starts in Group & Listed company for owner Sheikh Hamdan and trainer Mike de Kock. The filly had opened her 3YO campaign with an unlucky fourth at Turffontein on 4 October.

Majmu is the second of only three foals produced for Arrowfield by South American Group 1 juvenile winner Spontaneous before her death in September 2013. Her last foal, a colt by Not A Single Doubt, was purchased for $380,000 by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

Bought by Shadwell Australia for $300,000 from Arrowfield at the 2013 Inglis Easter Sale, Majmu is one of five South African Group winners by Redoute’s Choice. The others are Wylie Hall (Turffontein South African Derby G1), Musir (Greyville Golden Horseshoe S. G1) and Group 2 winners Honorine and Bishops Rock. Mike de Kock also trains Honorine and Wylie Hall.

Majmu completed an international Group race double on Saturday for Redoute’s Choice, after his 6YO daughter Bonaria won the VRC Myer Classic G1 on the Derby Day card at Flemington.
