For Generations to Come

In the final week before Arrowfield presents its next generation of Inglis Easter 2023 yearlings at Riverside Stables, the next generation of Arrowfielders share their personal draft favourites:
Dean Macaskill, Yearling Manager
Lot 157, The Autumn Sun-Grisi filly – “She’s a big, powerful filly that looks like she will do the farm proud, just like her big sister Autumn Ballet. She has an easy-going temperament with the looks to match. I’m very excited to follow her racing career.”
Lot 262, Snitzel-Nanyo Venus filly – “I love the Snitzels, they are such good-doing horses with great temperaments and I loved this filly from day dot when I took over the weanlings last July. She’s strong and athletic with a lovely temperament, and she floats when she walks.”
Lot 310, Snitzel-Response colt – “He is such a cool, calm, professional horse. He was quite timid at first, but has flourished in prep and not much bothers him. He has really matured into a magnificent-looking horse. To me, he’s the whole package.”
Alison Brassil, Sales & Nominations Consultant
Lot 222, The Autumn Sun-Meraki Miss filly – “This half-sister-in-blood to Samadoubt looks like a jet. She has quality and an attractive head with a great big hip, a strong forearm and gaskin and a big depth of girth.
“She has gone from strength to strength during prep, she looks a two-year-old and has recently shot up behind; she will shape up to be an impressive, powerful filly.”
Lot 254, Snitzel-Ms Bad Behaviour colt – “A Snitzel colt from a sharp US mare (like Wild Ruler) who is an exceptional first foal. This colt just looks fast; he’s a horse that I can’t tire of looking at.
“He has quality in spades with a masculine head, a great balance of strength and scope and uses himself in an active, forward-going manner. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the major two-year-old races and training on at three.”
Sally Gordon, Sales & Nominations Manager
Sally is also a fan of the Snitzel-Ms Bad Behavior colt – “He’s so sharp, he has a brain and looks like a stallion prospect now.”
Ditto the Snitzel-Nanyo Venus filly – “She is a queen, incredibly athletic, with so much quality, in the mould of Estijaab.”
Lot 285, Dundeel-Panorama Ridge colt – “Has lots of the same quality as his Group-winning half-sister Mallory, he’s a precocious style of Dundeel and very, very athletic.”
Lot 384, Dundeel-Stay With Me colt – “He’s just class, I loved him as a foal and he’s a gorgeous yearling.”
Mitchell Ralph, Sales & Nominations Consultant
Lot 88, Dundeel-Cross Amulet colt – “This is my Derby horse. I’ve been lucky enough to work in both the Arrowfield and Shadai Stallion Barns and this colt looks a lot like his sire Dundeel with the same colour and markings of his damsire Heart’s Cry. He’s a balanced colt with a great walk, a massive overstep, a great shoulder and a big girth.
“Cross Amulet is a full sister to the Caulfield Cup winner Admire Rakti. This is a dream horse for a Kiwi like me and I can easily see him running in the Derby races in a couple of years’ time.”
Lot 191, The Autumn Sun-Kirovskaya filly – “She’s a really impressive animal, good-looking like dad, with one of the biggest girths I’ve seen and a hindquarter to match.
“This is an extremely stacked Japanese family, and sons of Redoute’s Choice over French Deputy mares have a strike rate of 21.5% Stakeswinners to Runners, including this filly’s Group-winning three-quarter sister Irithea.”
Lot 305, Written Tycoon-Rationality filly – “She’s a very attractive, feminine filly, with one of those walks that looks like she floats and you can’t hear her feet touch the ground. As a type she has flowing lines across her body with a strong hindquarter which is very easy on the eye.
“Rationality is a full sister to champion Mentality and she’s already produced a good Written Tycoon called Bartley. It’s the same cross as Group 1 winner Booker and strikes at an impressive 15.6% Stakeswinners to Runners.”
Finally, Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer (not quite “next generation”, but never mind!) chips in with a couple of under-the-radar picks:
Lot 303, The Autumn Sun-Rainbow Song colt – “A Classic colt with a tremendous girth and a lovely shoulder. Great swagger to him. Looks an Australian Derby colt for mine.”
Lot 436, Castelvecchio-Valley of Light colt – “The Castelvecchios have impressed at every sale and this colt is no exception. He’s a beautifully made, attractive and athletic colt from a very well-bred Dubawi mare. Another great relaxed walker. I’m tipping him for the Champagne Stakes like his sire.”
