Flying Evelyn wins Group 3 Red Roses

Flying Evelyn became the third Group-winning graduate this Spring, and the second this week from Arrowfield’s 2020 Magic Millions draft when she powered up late to claim the $300,000 Red Roses S. 1100m G3 on Oaks Day at Flemington.

Her success follows the outstanding Group 1 victories of her Magic Millions draft-mates Profondo (Spring Champion Stakes) and last Saturday’s Victoria Derby winner Hitotsu.

She is also the 78th stakeswinner, and fourth this season for Not A Single Doubt, who continues to play a leading role in Australian racing from his retirement paddock at Arrowfield.

Fairly described as unlucky in her two previous starts, Flying Evelyn didn’t have a trouble-free run this time either. She was bumped several times when she took a narrow gap between Ashema and Robodira at the 300-metre mark, as jockey Brett Prebble reported.

“She was going to be dead unlucky…It got a bit tight, and she got squished pretty badly. Once she got her head in there and had galloping room, she really tried hard and charged to the line.”

It was the second win from six starts for the filly who was bought for $500,000 by John Sadler and is trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman for the Cieran Kayes-managed Flying Angels, Proko Athanasakos, Arrowfield & Alan Jones.

Flying Evelyn is the fourth winner and second stakes performer out of Champagne Run, a US-bred daughter of More Than Ready and Australian G1 winner Bollinger whose Champion 2YO dam Bint Marscay is proving an influential source of top-class horses.

The Not A Single Doubt/More Than Ready cross has been very successful, producing 6 stakeswinners, including Group 1 winner Miracles Of Life, from only 33 runners.

Champagne Run has a 2YO Pariah filly retained by Arrowfield, a yearling filly by The Autumn Sun to be offered at Magic Millions in January and a colt by The Autumn Sun born a few hours after his big sister’s Flemington victory.
