Arrowfield’s Inglis Classic Sale drafts consistently generate the rich rewards that excite smart value buyers.

For example, the 10 stakes performers from Arrowfield’s 104 lots offered at the 2014-18 Classic Sales have together earned $7.8 million – more than 7 times the total amount paid for them.

That group includes Maid Of Heaven, knocked down for $60,000 and subsequently the winner of the Spring Champion S. G1 and $337,000 in stakes. Her first foal will be offered at Inglis Easter 2022.

A year later her half-brother Castelvecchio was bought by Ottavio & Wendy Galletta for $150,000 and rewarded their investment with Group 1 wins at two and three, the Inglis 2YO Millennium, a Cox Plate second and $2.9 million prizemoney. He now commands a $30,000 fee on Arrowfield’s stallion roster.

A modest reserve of $60,000 didn’t tempt any buyers for Spill The Beans who became a multiple Group winner of $560,000 before selling to Aquis Farm for a promising stud career cut short after four seasons.

Other success stories from Arrowfield’s Classic Sale drafts include:

  • Perfect Match – bought for $130,000; 8-time winner & Group-placed in Hong Kong, earning $2 million
  • Dealmaker  – a $160,000 buy, he’s a multiple Group performer in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane with earnings of $487,000
  • Game Of Thorns – returned her purchase price on the track and was then sold as a broodmare for $350,000
  • Hit The Shot – bought for $170,000, earned $400,000 and was Group 1-placed in the Victoria Derby before his sale to Hong Kong for a 7-figure sum
  • Providenceprovides – a $50,000 purchase for China Horse Club, she’s a Group-placed city winner in New Zealand this season
  • Hong Kong winners Champion Supreme, Country Star, Joyful Heart, King’s Capital & Quadruple Double – average price $63,000
  • Australian city winners Calgary Queen, Don’t Doubt Lara, Pandano, Panzdown,  Roddandtodd, Valario, Wetakemanhattan – average price just over $62,000
  • And other recent winners Adonis Kick, Angelical, La Marsa, Largo Winch, Lasting Kiss, She’s A Sweet Deel, Sumdeel & Vienna Rain – all either passed in or sold for prices from $20,000 to $90,000.

Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer explains the opportunity offered by the 29 Classic yearlings Arrowfield will present at Riverside next month.

“We structure our Classic drafts principally around our new and emerging sires whose peak sale-ring prices are still ahead of them. That means there’s always an opportunity to buy a nice athletic horse by a stallion with a lot of upside, that we’ve backed very strongly.

“For example, Snitzel’s stakeswinners Odyssey Moon & Untamed Diamond were bought from our Classic draft for $25,000 and $30,000 in 2014 – the last year that Snitzel’s overall yearling sale average was less than $200,000.

“More recently, Castelvecchio was a life-changing find for the Gallettas, bought before Dundeel posted his first stakeswinner. He’s now the sire of five Group 1 winners, but his best-bred crops are still in the pipeline so the three Dundeel colts in our 2022 draft should be on every short-list!”

Arrowfield’s #ClassicGold Class of 2022 also features prominent second-season sires Maurice (sire of G1 winner Hitotsu) & Shalaa (sire of 2YO SW Semillion); first season sire Pariah; freshmen The Autumn Sun, Real Steel & Showtime; and single lots by Japan’s Group 1 sire Epiphaneia and Champion Sprinter-Miler Mikki Isle.

Arrowfield’s General Manager Paul Messara picks out five colts and two fillies that have caught his eye:

  • Lot 40 – Dundeel x Lures colt
“Very well put together and from a family Arrowfield knows so well. A great mover and very much in the mould of his sire. Above average colt.”

  • Lot 58 – Maurice x Mardi colt
“One of the real improvers of the draft and will only continue to improve with time. Good conformation with plenty of his damsire Redoute’s Choice about him. A lovely colt.”

  • Lot 278 – Pariah x Sultry Dreamer filly
“Athletic type of filly that is well balanced with a lovely shape and frame. She’s correct and another nice result from her dam.”

  • Lot 559 – Pariah x Fire Gully colt
“One of the standouts in the draft. Very good shoulder and conformation. A readymade racehorse.”

  • Lot 585 – Shalaa x Glove filly
“A sharp, athletic filly that is medium-sized and very well put together.”

  • Lot 752 – Showtime x Aurora’s Star colt
“Great shoulder and girth, sound in conformation and an ideal prospect from this sale.”

  • Lot 806 – Showtime x Karakuchi colt
“The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. A big improver throughout the preparation that catches the eye. Well-balanced and lovely top line.”
