Beneteau’s fifth debut 2YO winner
It’s just over two years since Beneteau died, and his first crop juveniles are busy building the best possible memorial: a growing list of winners that may yet earn him Australia’s Champion First Season Sires’ title.
He’s now had five winners, all of them on debut, most recently Lady Jivago who put up a strong performance to defeat the favourite Sanasana and Badraan over 1000 metres at Wyong on Thursday. Ironically, Sanasana was subsequently relegated behind Badraan to third, the position Beneteau filled behind her sire Star Witness in the 2010 Blue Diamond S. G1.
Lady Jivago was bred by Arrowfield & International Equities, the same partnership that bred Beneteau himself, and was bought by Luskin Park Stud from Arrowfield’s draft at the 2013 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. She was subsequently purchased from the Inglis Classic Sale (Winter Book) by Dr Ule Crossan who now races her in a nine-member partnership, including Wyong trainer Jeff Englebrecht.
Jeff said of the filly before Thursday’s win, “She is a nice filly, not overly big but very powerful and she has some brains. She has done everything right from the day we sent her to the breakers. Her long term goal is the Inglis Challenge at Scone in May, that’s what Ule bought her for.”
Lady Jivago’s dam Hussterics (by Hussonet) won two country races in a four-start career and hails from the wodnerful Easy Date family, responsible for Group 1 winners Snippets, Forensics & Rewaaya, as well as leading young sire Not A Single Doubt. Hussterics has a yearling filly by Beneteau, a weanling colt by Snitzel and is in foal to All American.
Beneteau’s other winners are Prompt Return, winner of the VRC Maribyrnong Plate G3 at his second start, Sydney winner Aegean Sea & Voilier, and Parcel, who won at Bendigo in December. Aditionally, It’s Vegas Baby has been placed twice, including a third in the BRC Phelan Ready S. LR.
Beneteau leads Hinchinbrook, War Chant, Reward for Effort and Starspangledbanner on the Australian First Season Sires’ table with $360,505. From his final crop he has two colts and a filly on offer in next week’s NZ Select Sale, and two colts & four fillies in the Inglis Classic Sale which starts on 8 February. As it happens, both of Arrowfield’s Beneteau fillies at the Classic Sale are, like Lady Jivago, from Hussonet mares.

The combination of Redoute’s Choice and his sons with Hussonet’s daughters has emerged as a cross to watch this season, thanks to outstanding South African filly Majmu & Group 3-winning colt Panzer Division, as well as Magic Millions Sprint winner Straturbo and Raise No Doubt (3 wins in Singapore).
