An exceptional year, in every way

As the Covid-19 pandemic that has dominated 2020 continues with global cases passing 83 million, it may seem frivolous to review Arrowfield’s outstanding success in a remarkable year for the Australian thoroughbred industry.

On the other hand, it is surely in times of crisis that we need to assert the enduring worth of everything that human beings care enough about to pursue – whether that’s developing a new vaccine or breeding a champion.

So, before we head towards the first yearling sale & major raceday of 2021, we look back at a truly exceptional year and wish everyone good health & plenty of success in 2021:

Twelve Arrowfield graduates compiled 16 Group & Listed victories from 1100m to 2500m in 2020, with three Group 1 winners in three categories coming early in the year: Alabama Express,  Tagaloa & Castelvecchio.

The Stud now celebrates a total of 77 Group 1 winners (including 27 outright or category Champions) on the Arrowfield Honour Roll since 1985.

Arrowfield’s multiple stakes-winning graduates in 2020 were Wild Planet and 3YO Not A Single Doubt colts Anders and Doubtland.

Broodmare gem Salutations earns a special mention as the dam of both Wild Planet & Super Seth (who also won the 2019 Caulfield Guineas G1). The daughter of Redoute’s Choice has 2019 & 2020 colts by Dundeel and is again in foal to the six-time Group 1 winner.

Arrowfield bred or co-bred all its 2020 graduate stakeswinners except Realm Of Flowers, Significance & Snitzkraft, and their prices ranged from $30,000 (for Missile Mantra) to $1.1 million (for Doubtland & Significance).

Other current Arrowfield graduates purchased for less than $60,000 include six-figure earners Dzsenifer, Eric the Eel (now in Hong Kong), Real Peace, Sunday Pray & Valario; while $1 million+ Arrowfield alumni also include Estijaab, Showtime, Stronger & Wandjina.

This year’s results highlight the Jockey Cap & Diamonds brand as a signifier of “prime stallion prospect”: Alabama Express, Castelvecchio & Super Seth are already at stud, while Anders & Tagaloa race for owners that now include major farms.

Worldwide Runners & Australian Yearlings

Arrowfield stallion highlights of 2020 were Snitzel’s 4th consecutive General Sires’ Premiership, his 3rd 2YO Sires’ title & Redoute’s Choice’s 2nd straight Broodmare Sire title. No sooner was Season 2019/20 done & dusted, than Woodside Park Stud’s Written Tycoon (who stood at Arrowfield this year) and Not A Single Doubt stepped up to dominate Spring racing and occupy the top two spots on the new season General Sires’ table.

The next generation of Arrowfield stallions is led by Dundeel whose six stakeswinners in 2020 were headed by Group 1 winners Truly Great and top-class 2YO & 3YO Castelvecchio, now on the Arrowfield roster.

Shalaa was the Stud’s only returning shuttler in 2020 and he served a full book following his warm reception by Australian yearling buyers and the Breeders’ Plate G3 victory of his first runner, Shaquero.

Although Arrowfield’s Japanese stallions were unable to travel south in 2020, Maurice (whose Shadai fee for 2021 has doubled to ~$A100,000), Mikki Isle & Real Impact made good progress with their early runners in both hemispheres. Past stallions Olympic Glory & Scissor Kick, both now based in France and both represented by yearlings at Magic Millions 2021, also advanced their records over the past 12 months.

Arrowfield presents a 61-lot draft, including 3 colts & 3 fillies by freshman sire Pariah, at Magic Millions 2021 – find out more from our Interactive Catalogue with videos, photos, reports, opinions & analysis.
