Alverta Rewards Messara In Coolmore Classic

Talented young trainer Paul Messara made his Group One breakthrough at Rosehill today when his favourite mare Alverta ran away with the $600,000 Coolmore Classic.

Alverta holds a special place in Messara’s career as she gave the Scone-based trainer his first metropolitan win, his first black-type success and now his first Group One victory.

The son of Arrowfield Stud supremo John Messara said the win by the six-year-old daughter of Flying Spur was a great result for his family but unfortunately his parents could not share in the celebrations as they were attending a wedding.

Young jockey Tye Angland played a big part in the win as he took charge of the race when he decided to go forward and sit outside the leader Gold Water.

Angland recorded only his second G1 win when Alverta dashed clear at the 300m with Gold Water boxing on gamely to hold second in a leader dominated race.

The heavily backed favourite Palacio De Cristal stormed home late to finish third.

Messara was elated by the win and the part Alverta has played in his career.

“She’s been fantastic,” Messara said.

“All the way through she’s been the stable star.

“She never lets us down.”

Alverta has now won eight of her 35 starts and almost $1 million in prizemoney.
